Warning warning warning, J. Helios about to do a NON-Yaoi 1x2 fic. *gasp* Is that possible? Well, I’m trying to make it possible.

Other than sap, this doesn’t have anything bad. Well, a spoiler or two I guess but not too much. Oh, Suggests a little death tho’ that up to you to decide.

Gwing doesn’t own itself. This is not owned by me either. It’s owned by Bandai and all those people at the credits which I cannot really find time to read. The creative juices that spewed this out are mine though. Inspiration comes from, shall we say, ‘Heero’ IRL.

And thus...!

What Was Said Will Stay

By : Jericah Helios. ‘Ms. J.’

Heero woke up 6:35 on the dot. As usual. For a moment, he stared blankly at the ceiling and wondered what he was waiting for. It took a whole minute for him to realize that he was waiting for Duo to wake up and make noise. Or something.

But Duo wouldn’t wake him up with that Maxwell-brand noise anymore. No more. No more somethings, no more anythings. Nothing.

He stood up and walked to his bathroom. Leaning over the sink, refusing to look up at his reflection, he felt his brain cells reawakening and supplying him with the information.

Of course Duo would never wake him up again.

          Duo was gone.

No more noise. No more long hair strands clogging up the drain. No more strawberry smelling shampoo smells in the bathroom right after he used it. No more banging on the door with threats of bloody hell if he didn’t come out. No more messy things. No more hair ties that pop into the netherworld when looked for. No more Duo.

          No more.

He looked up finally, only to splash water on his face and stalked to the shower cubicle.

There will be a time where I will not be there anymore Heero. Whether I’m…gone or distant, just remember that even if we’re friends it doesn’t mean our lives are forever entwined. I suggest you never think of forever, unless you’re in love. You’re in love aren’t you Heero? I know it. I haven’t been hanging around you for nothing. I know you. I know what you would say to anything that happens. I would know.

“Then you should know what will happen when you left.”

          “Pardon me?”

Heero blinked as the lady at the counter raised an eyebrow at him. He looked around and found himself at the supermarket.

Anou…nothing” he paid her and carried off his small plastic bag of groceries.

Opening the passenger side of his car he dumped the bag in and closed the door. He went around the car and climbed into the driver’s side. He sat there for a while, his head leaning on the steering wheel.

Of all the conversations he had with Duo, real conversations with BOTH of them talking, the last few ones stayed with him the most. Maybe because it was the times when Duo seemed to grow mature, when Duo sounded so grown up. Grown up and away from him.

And those conversations, ran through his head.

Sometimes Heero, you blame yourself for the oddest things. You’re as bad as Quatre sometimes. Except you’re worse. You keep it inside. Hahahaha, don’t give me that look, yeah I know. I know for every time you hear that someone died you think it’s your fault. The War is over Heero. You’re, well, in a matter of speaking, normal now. You’re just a civilian now. You don’t kill anymore my friend.

No one is expecting that you go back to being Mr. Perfect Soldier. No, screw the officials in the military that are trying to get you back, screw them in a bad way. I’d love to stuff my scythe up their…anyway.

You’ve got a life now. I’d be damned if I let you ruin it.

He drove down the quiet streets of the suburb. It was a Wednesday, just about to be noon. The apple trees that lined the roads swayed slightly with the wind and Heero could just see the beginnings of lots of apples for spring.

Looking for happiness is just like looking for apples Heero. Sometimes you’re just in front of the apple tree already and you can’t see the apples. But even if you DO look up and see the apples, you can’t just stand there with your mouth open. The apples won’t fall into your mouth; you’ve got to clamber up the tree, risk a skinned knee or maybe a few bruises or two. But then, those little pains make the apple sweeter. Because you worked for it.

Of course, if all this time you’re looking for apples on the ground then all you’ll see are the spoilt ones. They’ll be too bruised or too soft to eat and most likely they’d have more worms.

Then you’d think that all the apples in the world are spoilt, rotten and too soft when all the while, you never even thought of looking up an apple tree…

He pulled up to the house.

Taking the groceries to the kitchen, he swatted the answering machine where several messages waited for him. One was from Quatre, asking if he was coming to the party this weekend. Another was from Wufei, telling him that Noin wanted to speak with Heero.

Heero paused a moment at Quatre’s message and shrugged nonchalantly. He rolled his eyes at Wufei’s message. He finished putting the groceries where they were supposed to be and he grabbed from the chiller a can of beer. He walked out to the back yard and sat for a while under the apple tree.

There is so much I wish I could give you, you know. If you’d only let me that is. It’s strange really, we both seemed to have nothing of our childhood. We were robbed of it and we ended up protecting the ones who stole it from us.

But unlike you Heero, I adapt. If I couldn’t have my own childhood, I’ll make sure You have some. Have fun you stone-faced fool. And even if I have to break by back bending backwards and forwards just so you can at least crack a smile every so often it’ll be worth my while. Smile more you. Heck, my presence alone should be enough to make you smile. It should be anyway.

Cold liquid touched his lips and he drank absentmindedly, eying the nearby growth of Malaysian mums that he thought would never grow. They were pathetic little caricatures of themselves when Duo had hauled them out of some god awful place. Despite Heero’s insistence that they would die whatever Duo would do, he planted them in the back yard.

And now here they were, growing abundantly, in a multitude of colors, as if they had been meant to grow there in the first place.

You think I’m impatient. Maybe I am. But I am patient with the right things. I know I have to wait for good things to come my way if I have to. I also know that sometimes I have to get up and go to get what I want. Sometimes I wait when I have to, sometimes I don’t.

But with you I have had to do a lot of waiting. A whole lot. But I learned in my life that the more you wait, the greater the time you spent in waiting, the greater the reward.

I have been waiting for you, Heero and I still am.

Finishing the can, he picked himself up and walked back to the house, noting with surprise that the sun was leaving purple and orange streaks in the sky. He had taken up an entire afternoon just to finish a can of beer.

Tossing the can into a waste basket he went back into his living room and sat on a sofa, contemplating the pictures on his mantelpiece.

Beside the acknowledgement for his services in the army, was a small picture of all five of them in their stiff military regalia. Somehow, all of them looked suited to the uniform with their passive expressions while saluting. But Duo stood out, with a jaunty salute and an expressive grin. The picture was taken sometime after the completion ceremonies. They had been given medals and plaques by Relena herself.

Heck, you probably think I’m the shallowest person in the world. Oh no don’t deny it. I know it. It’s in the way you speak to me sometimes.

I don’t mind really. If that’s what you think of me, I think it’s a compliment really.

          How?

Well, the shallowest people usually are the happiest.

I’m glad you think I’m a happy person. I try to be. I really do.

Heero stood then and walked back into his room, and went to sleep.

Author’s notes : Okay, weird fic I know. But I had this vision of Heero walking around, just thinking about what Duo said to him, after he left. After all, what will be left, since they’re friends, will be the things they shared. And since Duo’s a *ehem* VOCAL personality, they would’ve shared conversations more, or so I think. I dunno. Bahala na. ^_^ Send all reactions and comments to [email protected] and [email protected] Thanks!
