MoonWatcher’s Equilibrium
By : Osiris
And she stepped off the Jeep.
Adjusting the strap of her little black bag, MoonWatcher
sighed and walked sullenly on. The gate swallowed her apathetically, blinking
away the early morning light. MoonWatcher looked at
the dark shadows within the gate and glanced back at the sunshine she left
behind. “Never mind the sunshine” she said to herself, “It’s just sunshine”
“It’s just sunshine” she
kept on repeating to herself as she walked past the noisy children. A tug on
her jacket brought her gaze down at Starshine. “Bye,
bye” said her sister and jogged off to her classmates.
MoonWatcher observed the bits and
pieces of sunshine that stuck to her little sister. Looking down, she found the
pieces of Starshine’s sunlight peeling off of her and
running away from the shadows of the school. Running away especially from the
shadows it saw in MoonWatcher’s heart. “It’s just
sunshine.” She repeated her voice
hushed.
Walking up the stairs to
the high school building, MoonWatcher marveled at the
way the sunshine had broken through the ingrained shadows of the school and how
they cast tiny slivers of golden baked sunlight on the steps. She suddenly
stopped marveling when she saw the sunlight leaning away from her shadow. “It’s
just sunshine” she said yet again.
Something told her to
look up and she did. MoonWatcher had just saved
herself from bumping into PaleRose. MoonWatcher nodded and moved on.
She didn’t mean to be
rude. PaleRose was no more than an acquaintance
really. An acquaintance that MoonWatcher
loved seeing. Loved seeing…loved?
But nevertheless, never
expect a ‘hi’ from me, thought MoonWatcher as she
entered her classroom. It was empty save for one classmate who had fallen
asleep on the desk. “I don’t say hi” muttered MoonWatcher
as she sat down to finish her assignment.
And classes begin and MoonWatcher takes notes.
“When the supply and the
demand meet here in the middle” her itsy-bitsy economics teacher graphed on the
dark green black board. “It’s called equilibrium”
“Equilibrium” repeated MoonWatcher as she copied, “A state of balance between
supply and demand”
“Give examples” called
her itsy-bitsy economics teacher.
“The demand I have for
warmth and light must be equal to the supply of sunshine in the world.” Replied MoonWatcher to the paper.
“When the supply exceeds
the demand” continued her itsy-bitsy economics teacher “it’s called a surplus”
her sharp eyes gazed across the room, “Give examples in your notebook.”
“The supply of sadness
and trials in my life exceeds my demand for it” wrote MoonWatcher’s
hand. “A surplus of sadness.”
The itsy-bitsy economics
teacher ‘humphed’ and continued yet again. “When the
demand exceeds the supply however,” she said, drawing a dot on her graph on the
dark green black board. “It is a deficit” the soft tap-tap-scrape of the chalk
continues as she spoke again. “Give examples.”
“The demand for happiness
and contentment in my life exceeds the supply that the world gives” MoonWatcher scribbled in her weak handwriting. “A deficit
of happiness”
MoonWatcher closed her eyes.
Come break time, she
wrote her assignment again. PaleRose crossed her path
but MoonWatcher didn’t look up. At
least not obviously. She would look like she loved to see PaleRose. Loved to see…loved?
Looking up she saw SadHarlequine with WhiteSnow and MoonGoddess. She nodded again.
SadHarlequine, WhiteSnow
and MoonGoddess were her friends. She missed them a
lot but…missed? Loved?
“A surplus of sadness”
repeated Moonwatcher when they had left.
“A surplus of sadness”
she repeated to the bad on her way home. “A deficit of happiness and sunshine”
Climbing up her old, old
tower, she sat on her bed and fell limply on the dusty sheets.
“What must I do with a
surplus and a deficit?” she asked aloud.
The moon looked down
sadly.
“Find an
equilibrium in them my Watcher” the moon said softly as MoonWatcher’s eyes fell closed. “In them find your
balance.”
