The Business Side

So. You want to know about the business side of me. Hopefully this page will help you.

Quick Facts:
School : University of Illinois Urbana Champaign
               College of Business Administration
Major: Management Information Systems / Finance
Major GPA : 3.7/4.0

Technology and today's world are so closely intertwined. You cannot progress in this society without the aid of technology. Almost every business and organization, whether large or small, private or public, and profit or non-profit uses technology. They use it in different ways, from running a business more smoothly to helping to solve problems quicker, faster, and cheaper. In addition, they use this technology to improve their systems to make them more effecient and effective. Being a MIS major is very helpful to these companies. MIS encompasses three major fields in business. Management, which is part of the decision making process. Information, which is data collected about the company, competitors, enviornment, and customers. Systems, which help combine information and mamagement. Together, these attributes can help run companies more smoothly.

So how does this involve me?

Currently, I have just graduated from University of Illinois Urbana Champaign with a degree in Management Information Systems. I have taken many major classes concerning my field of studies. From working with information systems and the internet to managing databases and solving operations problems, my classes have taught me how to best use my knowledge in the business world. In each class, group projects are stressed because the professors know that in the business world, most people work in groups. These projects allow me to experience and understand what actual working MIS people do. A few of my projects have included studying about data security, both external (firewalls and encryption) and internal (passwords and systems), studying a company to understand how it works (my group studied the Royal Carribian Cruise Lines), and how organizations work more in depth. In addition to my MIS background, I have taken many finance courses. I have completed the core requirements for a Finance major in addition to my MIS major. I have taken courses in Financial Markets, Financial Investments, Advanced Corporate Finance and International Financial Markets. I have taken these finance courses to enhance my knowledge of how the financial system works. Thus, being both MIS and Finance, I hope to find a job ranging from financial analysis or consulting to working with networks and administration.

Past Experiences

Fortunately, as a child growing up, I was always intrigued at learning how to do thing. As I went through my junior high school years I watched and learned about jobs. Thus, during my high school years and college carreer thus far, I have had a wide variety of jobs. During my high school career, I have held jobs as cook (for pasta and pizza), waiter, cashier, painter, and clerk. The position of clerk interested me the most as it dealt with a large section of the business world. First, my only job was to file papers and little things like that. But as I learned more, I worked with the database of the company and was able to check up on different investments for clients. This job was by far my best job in high school. I contiued this job throughout the rest of my high school career and into my college career. Along the way, I worked at another company called Genex Services. Here, I learned work as a transriptionist. I also gained knowledge about the company and how it worked. I got to see first hand how many management matters were presented and solved. This helped me in my desire to learn more about management and problem solving because the way that I saw things done was inefficient. Problems were not identified thoroughly and were not solved considering the environmental scope of the company. This intrigued me to learn more about problem solving. In my next job (the next summer) I worked for Lucent Technologies. I was assigned to help an asset manager in any way possible. This job included checking up on certain clients such as GTE, Anixter, and Sprint. In addition, I used SAP to work on the databases containing information about many other companies. I was also helped out in the accountacy side. I was assigned to work on the billing of many companies. I was directly involved in writing up the billing statement that was to be sent to clients. This job experience helped me learn a better understanding of a larger international company. I was able gain experience in something that was interesting to me while at the same time able to see how my educational learning was playing a part in the real world.
