Den Haag Sculptuur 2003

A slight departure from the usual fodder. We give our personal spin on the annual sculpture exhibition on the Lange Voorhout which houses among others the British embassy. It contains some adult imagery so those who are easily offended hit the Back button now. It's art so it's fine for open plan offices.

This year's theme is Model Vrouwen or female role models. On the inscriptions the titles are in French, Dutch , German and English but for consistency I will translate to English please accept my apologies in advance for mistranslations and misinterpretations.

And now for a spot of feminist art from mother of three Maja van Hali. And yes the subject is doing the vacuuming. I put a gradient in the background as the leafy avenue was too much of a distraction.

A slightly off-white background for this one La Savonette by Robert Couturier. The black line appeared by accident but I left it in as it looked good. I've just broken my own rules die to only an intermediate knowledge of French.

Bit of a moody one but the shade meant that the details didn't come out as well as we would have liked.

And now for something a little lighthearted. Catwoman put a one Euro coin in the slot and see what happens. Six of the best is EUR 5.

Another view with some lighting effects added.

Zoom in and perhaps some anti-American humour though on reflection it's probably asking them to come back.

The darker side of femininity is explored in Day and Night. If you look at the faces they are sisters not the same person.

By way of contrast we've included a goddess type figure.

Somehow a horse has made it into a set of sculptures on women presumably because they are elegant graceful and intelligent.

"It ain't over 'till the fat lady sings" and variations can be heard in English football grounds near the end of the season when relegation dramas are being played out. Interestingly the expression comes from the world of opera as do some of the songs. Our cover girl is from Columbian artist Fernando Botero who has an exhibition across town in the Gementeemuseum.
