Scheveningen Beach 2003

Holland's number one beach resort which continues to pull in the crowds who put up with all sorts of traffic and parking problems just to get in with the crowd and be seen. Personally speaking I never saw the attraction of coming when it busy preferring the off-peak periods when it good to get put of the city and find a bit of space. Try Autumn or a cold but sunny winter day.

We begin with the Kurhaus hotel, casino and restaurant seen on our way up to the sea from the city. And that no misprint if you do cycle beware of the long gentle climb up to the sea not a problem if there is no wind but there always is.

Forward Backward

A newer casino - having driven all this way make sure you don't loose your car but if you do you might get home a bit quicker.

Forward Backward

Two of the new new apartment blocks that sprung up in the eighties and a tram forming Line 1 to Delft via the two main stations.

Forward Backward

Some American humour at the hot dog stand. Something tells me it's satirical. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Forward Backward

A slightly more experimental shot of the familiar helter skelter of the pier - the crane is for a bungy jump and not an attempt to reclaim international waters.

Forward Backward

All along the promenade (in British English this means a long straight road by the sea I think Americans say strip) there are beach huts offering food and drink of various kinds and they have become increasingly sophisticated - someone has gone to a huge effort to design this one based on a Mexican shack near the American border. Some offer German beer (we have never seen Weisbier.) barbecue steaks etc. etc.

Forward Backward

A surreal sand sculpture depicting a slayed horse topped a couple of rabbits - not available at any of the beach huts as far as I know.

Forward Backward

Forward Backward

A couple of more conventional beach shots indicating that there is still hectares of space.

Forward Backward

Round to the harbour and a couple of less crowded and very cheap fish restaurants.

Forward Backward

For those seeking some piece and quiet head for the Diundigt area between Scheveningen and Kijkduin at the end of line 12 once again from both main stations.

Forward Backward

We head for Kijkduin by way of the dunes.

Forward Backward

More in your face seductive advertising - this time for frites or French Fries - don ask for curry sauce as mayonase is the only dressing available. And no they don do pies but there is an equivalent local joke.

Forward Backward

Forward Backward

We'll finish with a couple of crowd shots - it almost looks as if they stretch all the way to Calais.

The usual travel advice - you can park in Den Haag and take the tram if you don want to spen ages in traffic or you can come by train to either of the main stations of course but while thinking this through we decided that the best way to get ot the coast is to hire a bike from one of the stations and cycle through the city leafy areas and parks. It such a good idea that we are going to do it in a later piece for the site so keep checking the home page. Oh and for those in the British Isles thinking of coming to Europe for their holidays the price of an Irish breakfast has been held at EUR 12.
