As a crafter reaches a sufficient level of competetancy, his/her interests will start to refine into a particular subcraft area. The WoodCraft has a few sub-catagories in which our woodsmiths specialize in. Generally, a woodsmith will choose one and study only that subcraft. This results in a woodsmith Master who is top in his or her field. Rarely will a woodsmith master all of the subcrafts. Certain woodsmiths find that their subcraft tends to cross over into the other subcrafts, and will then want to study both. This is allowed of high-ranking woodsmiths. If you're interested in second-subcrafting, contact Hadrina or Lyxia.
Below is a breakdown of the six subcrafts currently active in the WoodCraft:
SubCraft: General (GEN)
General is the area under which an apprentice is first placed. It is a time of exploration for the would-be WoodCrafter. A WoodCrafter is listed under the General SubCraft when they first join, and through their initial apprenticeship. Upon promotion to Sr. Apprentice, it is believed that the apprentice has had enough experience, and learned enough of the basic skills of each subcraft, to decide which area they are interested in. The General catagory gives apprentices time to work within each area of the Craft.
SubCraft: Carpentry (CPR)
This area is headed by NPC Master Ilern. It encompasses knowledge of furniture, balance, design, aesthetics, and creation. The carpentry woodsmith understands the full development of a product, from dealing with the commissioner, designing and developing, picking the correct woods, building, and finishing. They can create anything from small toys to full working trader wagons. Size matters not to them, for everything is interrelated and they understand that relation. They also understand and use the interrelation of the woodcraft subcrafts to supply all of Pern's woodcrafting needs. A WoodCrafter specializing in carpentry will deal more with the creation of useful objects on Pern.
SubCraft: Carving (CRV)
This area is headed by Area Master Jessup. Such exquisite detail goes into so many of the crafts' products. It is this detail that those who specialize in the Carving area mainly deal with. Those in this area will understand the properties of the woods, such that they can produce intricate designs within the grain. They specialize in carving and producing small items or doing decorative work on other large projects. They oversee the creation of mark blanks and the woodcrafts symbol on some. They work in fine, small, and delicate creations. They have specialized knowledge in the miniature tools that they use to create such fine work. This is the truly artistic area within the craft.
SubCraft: Forestry (FOR)
This area is headed by Area Master Dione. It encompasses a working knowledge of forestry and woods. Crafters will deal with planting and upkeep of the forests of Pern. They will be able to identify all the woods used by the Craft and the trees from which they come. They understand what climate certain trees will grow best in, where to find any particular kind of wood, the uses for each kind of wood, and sometimes can be found experimenting with new woods from the Southern Continent. They understand in depth such concepts as wood strength, grain, and flexibility.
SubCraft: Processes (PRO)
This area is headed by NPC Master Irene. Crafters specializing in this area will understand and replicate the processes of drying and curing woods. How best to do it, when to do it, where to do it, variations between types of trees. They also understand the changes between a wood from when it is green to when it is seasoned. Other areas of Processes involves the various dyes, stains and paints used to enhance the beauty of the wood, soap making, and paper production.
SubCraft: Tools (TOO)
This area is headed by NPC Master Fiala. It is an area which encompasses the mechanics of the Craft. Crafters specializing in this field will have knowledge of all the tools used within the field of woodcrafting. They will be updating and restoring faded blueprints, and are able to repair any of the tools used in the Craft. They will know what each tool is for, how it works, what is best to use for certain applications, and understand the few complex machines that the woodcraft employs, such as those found in the sawmill or lumberyard. They are responsible for machine maintenance, making sure tools are sharp, and other general tool care. Due to the nature of the subcraft, most Tool Crafters will spend time learning metalworking processes at the SmithCraft Hall.
