The Wade Edwards North Carolina Short Fiction AwardThe Wade Edwards Foundation will award the annual Wade Edwards Short Fiction Award to the North Carolina high school junior who submits the year's most outstanding original work of short fiction.The competition, supported by the North Carolina English Teachers Association and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, is intended to reward excellence in creative writing and to encourage contemplation of virtues among high school students. In their submitted short fiction students are encouraged to consider and address one or more of the qualities associated with Wade Edwards - humility, strength of convictions, loyalty, honor, charity, determination, the value of friendship and the obligations of friendship and community.

Finalists will be chosen through district wide competitions. The final judges will be renowned writers, teachers and critics.
The Wade Edwards Memorial National College ScholarshipWade Edwards was one of the ten national winners of the inaugural National Conversation Essay Contest in 1996. To honor the memory of Wade's passion and talent for writing, the Wade Edwards Foundation, in cooperation with the National Endowment for the Humanities and Voice of America, is participating in support of the Wade Edwards Memorial Scholarship, a $5,000 college scholarship awarded to the winner of the National Conversation Essay Contest.The contest is a nationwide essay contest conducted in 23,000 American high schools and administered by the National Endowment for the Humanities and Voice of America.
The Wall of Friendship at Needham B. Broughton High SchoolThe Wade Edwards Foundation has participated in the creation of a wall and bench at Needham B. Broughton High School. The structure, a 100 foot seating area adjacent to St. Mary's Street, was designed by artist Thomas Sayre. The wall and bench border an existing oak canopied area where students meet for lunch.The wall is designed to contain the permanent and unique imprints of Broughton students. The entire structure is based on the image of a comet, a symbol of the short but bright light with which some lives, like Wade's, adorn our communities and enrich our lives. |
