The Spirit of the Twenty First

by Tony Underwood

We're Carolina Tarheels,
Hailing from the old North State.
To Dixie and the Southland,
We're proud to link our fate.
We've raised on high our banner,
And marched off to war.
For Southern Independence,
On Freedom's Golden Shore.
The Twenty First Infantry
Is our regimental name,
And standing tall in battle
It is our call to fame.
We've fought for General Trimble,
And with ole Stonewall too,
To stop yankee aggression
From the northern hordes in blue.
Our patriotic loved ones
Are sad to see us leave,
And if we fall in battle,
I'm sure that they will grieve.
We marched off from the Piedmont.
Our spirits were so high.
To drive the yankees from our soil,
We're all prepared to die.
From a creek they called Manassas,
Turned red with yankee blood,
To Appomattox Courthouse,
With heads held high,we stood.
We always answered duties call,
And when our muskets spoke,
The tyrants we sent fleeing
Though the battles fire and smoke.
With leaders like Jeff Davis,
And good ole Bobby Lee,
We served our country bravely,
And never did we flee.
We fought for Dixie's honor.
With bayonet and steel.
We love our dear old Southland,
And I know we always will.
