Stationed at Camp Hardee, May 8 - September 1, 1861.
May 8,---- The company was organized at Lexington, North Carolina and called the Davidson Guards. Was equipped by the citizens of Davidson County.
June 12,-- Marched to Danville.
June 28,-- Was mustered into service into the Eleventh Regiment of North Carolina Volunteers.
July 8,---- Held an election for field officers at which [William Whedbee] Kirkland was elected colonel commandant; [James] M. Leach, Lieutenant-Colonel; [James] M. Richardson, Major.
July 12-14, -- Left Danville and arrived at Richmond on July 14. Left Richmond.
July 17,----- Arrived at Manassas Junction in the morning at 5 a.m. and marched to Bull Run, where our Army was stationed. Took our position on the left of the line of battle about one mile to the left of Mitchell's Ford and participated in the fight. At night marched down and took our position behind the breastworks on the right of the ford.
July 21, --- Remained under arms until Sunday morning at 6 a.m., when a brisk cannonade was commenced by the enemy from their battery in the road about one mile in our front and kept up until 4 p.m. When the rout commenced the company joined in the pursuit and continued the pursuit about two and one-half miles. Captured a large amount of baggage and several prisoners. Returned to our camp about 11 o'clock that night and partook of a meager supply of food.
August 6, --- Remained at the ford until moved for Camp Rhett, distance two miles. The health of the regiment was becoming bad.
August 24-September 1,--- Left Camp Rhett and pitched our tents at Camp Hardee, a more healthy location, where we still remain.

September 14, --- Our regiment left Camp Hardee and went to Broad Run Station, some twenty miles from Manassas Junction, Virginia for its health.

October 17, --- Remained there until Thursday, when we marched to Centreville, Virginia and joined our brigade commanded by General [George Bibb] Crittenden. Our company was only eleven strong at that time.

October 26, --- We then remained in camp until we went on picket duty for three days, then we returned to our camp and were reunited by three of our company from Broad Run Station.

    Some dates of absentees are not set opposite their names, Captain [Byrd] Snow having been killed. In the late engagement some papers were misplaced.

Company D
Stationed at Camp Hardee, June 22-September 1, 1861.
July 13,--- Left Danville, Virginia and after traveling 140 miles by rail, arrived at Richmond.
July 16-17,--- Remained there until traveled a distance of  ----- miles and arrived at Manassas Junction on the evening of July 17.
July 18,--- Early in the morning marched four miles to Bull Run and were posted on the left in the battle of that day. None killed or wounded.
July 21,--- Were placed in the center and under a heavy cannonade all day. In evening charged on the enemy and pursued several miles without any loss in killed or wounded.

September 14, --- Moved camp to Broad Run Station, a distance of ten miles on Manassas Gap Railroad.
October 17,--- Remained there until all the well men were sent to this place.

Company E

Stationed at Camp Hardee, May 24 - August 31, 1861.
May 24, --- The Forsyth Grays, Company E, Eleventh Regiment, North Carolina Volunteers was received into service by the state of North Carolina and immediately went into camp at Salem, North Carolina, from thence it marched to Danville, Virginia, where the regiment was organized.
July 12, --- Went by railroad to Richmond.
July 16, --- Started to Winchester to join the command of General Johnson.
July 17, --- On reaching Manassas Junction in the evening the regiment was detained by General [Pierre Gustave Toutant] Beauregard.
July 18, --- Early in the morning marched to Bull Run and remained in the line of battle during the day. The regiment received a few shills from the enemy's cannon but was not actively engaged in the battle of that day, its position being on the left. In the evening the regiment took position at Mitchell's Ford on the direct road from Manassas to Centreville.
July 21, --- Occupied the same position on Sunday. This company was under the fire of the enemy's cannon several hours during the battle but sustained no loss. On that evening it joined in the pursuit, passed through the enemy's camp to within half a mile of Centreville, when the regiment was ordered to return to its position at Mitchell's Ford.

At 5 o'clock in the evening the command was given for us to charge upon the enemy which command was promptly obeyed. Pursued the enemy several miles but sustained no loss.

June 24 - 29, --- The company left Dobson and arrived at Danville on June 28 or 29.
July 14, --- Left Danville for Richmond.
July 17, --- Arrived at Manassas.
July 18, --- In the morning marched to the line of battle at Bull Run. Stationed on the left wing. the attack was made on the center of the line.
July 21, --- Stood in readiness until placed in the center of the line of battle near the main road from Fairfax Court-House to Manassas. Remained here for several days after the battle. In the evening of july 21 we were commanded to pursue the enemy. Pursued them nearly three miles, captured various kinds of property, and returned to our position on Bull Run.
    We moved our camp from Bull Run two and one-half miles east of better water and atmosphere. After remaining here several days we moved ten miles west of Camp Hardee in order to regain health.

Stationed at Centreville, Virginia, September - October  1861.
September 14, --- Left Camp Hardee and marched to railroad. Took passage to Broad Run Station in Fauquier County, Virginia, about seven miles from Camp Hardee.
October 17, --- Remained there (in sick camp) until such time seven privates, three noncommissioned officers and first lieutenant reported for duty and stared for Centreville, where we are now in camp. Have had five recruits from sick camp since we came here.
October 26-29, --- We went out on picket duty and returned to camp Tuesday evening October 29.

July 18, --- In the morning we were marched to the battleground of Bull Tun and were placed on the left of the line of battle, which was an important position. At night we were placed on picket some two miles above Mitchell's Ford, which was a post of danger.
July 21, --- We were placed in the center of the line of battle at Mitchell's Ford on the road leading from Fairfax Court-House to Manassas. During the day we were under a heavy cannonade. At 5 p.m. we advanced upon the enemy and pursued him to Centreville.

June 21-July 7, --- My company began to drill. Marched to Danville, Virginia and rendezvoused there until July 7.
July 12, --- Was sworn in.
July 13, --- Was transported to Richmond, Virginia. Was transported thence to Manassas Junction.
July 17, --- Arrived there in the evening.
July 18, --- In the morning were marched to the battleground at Bull Run and placed on the left wing of our Army and occupied a dangerous post.
July 20, --- On Saturday we were placed out as pickets at the Robert's House, where we could see the movements of the enemy on the opposite hill and discovered that their movements were in the direction of Stone Bridge on our left.
July 21, --- We were placed in the center of our line of battle to guard the roads from Fairfax Court-House to Manassas Junction. During the whole day the enemy threw cannonballs and shells at us in our trenches and in the evening we were march in pursuit of the enemy; ran them from where their battery was and  through their encampment and quit our pursuit when [within] a half mile of Centreville.
August 6, --- We marched from Mitchell's Ford to Camp Rhett.
August 23, --- We marched to Camp Hardee.

Stationed at Broad Run, September-October 1861.
September 12, --- My company marched with those of Captains Boyd and Whorton out one mile from Camp Hardee to a place we called Camp Crittenden, leaving the nine other companies at that place.
September 17, --- Our three companies were transported to a place a quarter of a mile of Thoroughfare Station, which was called Camp Gilmore, being one mile distant from the Broad Run Station, where the other companies were encamped.
October 21-31, --- By order our three companies marched through the Thoroughfare Pass to a high hill on sight of the camps on the Broad Run Station, where we now are excepting those of us who have been marched down to the Army of the Potomac near Centreville.
