Generally the theme is about politics and political maneuvering. Sometimes there are overtones of other aspects related to the nightly activities of kindred but for the most part the game will be the evolution of the Jyhad in the final nights. Other aspects of the game include intrigue and mystery with a lot of darkness inserted for flavor. Moods of the game are generally dark, and somber. Particular attention will be paid to the struggles of such a small community of vampires in maintaining their strength and security while surrounded by potential enemies, and hiding within such a small community of mortals.
All manner of role-playing is acceptable for this venue; however politics, intrigue, and suspense are greatly preferred to gratuitous violence. Mass murdering of mortals and destruction of property will be heavily discouraged by the Storytellers, and characters engaging in such activities will be heavily persecuted in character.
Notes:
World of Darkness. No, really! Its not just foggy or hazy in Lawrence, it really is a World of Darkness. Okay, city of darkness at least. The most dangerous antagonist for the PCs will be other PCs. It is a small ocean, and it is full of sharks. And these sharks never get old and tired
Be warned, this is a NC-17 rated game, you have to be an adult to play for a reason. Game content may (and probably will) include violence and/or sexual content.
As per current Cam supplement. Proxies are welcome with a 48-hour notification of the CST (this 48 hours may be shortened at the convenience and discretion of the CST). This proxy information should include a complete character sheet, XP log, as much of the background as the player wishes to provide, and as much detail regarding goals, methods, and possible choices regarding the proxy as the player is willing to provide. It should also include a description of the way that the character will be traveling to the game and contact information for the supervising storyteller of the character.Players who proxy characters face the potential possibility that their character may die or worse at the game. All players who do send proxies are assumed to understand this aspect of Proxy play.
In addition to the standard Proxy rules, there will be three additional types of Proxy allowed in Lawrence, they are Soft Proxy, Standing Proxy, and Temporary Proxy. They are detailed as followed below:
Soft Proxy This includes any kind of Proxy which is not expected to require any kinds of challenges, or to require only limited challenges. This includes most proxies which will not be occurring at a game. It also includes any time that a character will be affecting or observing the game or a scene, without being directly involved, or having checked their character in at the beginning of the game. This type of proxy requires that the player contact the Storyteller 48 hours before the time of the Proxy with what the character intends to be doing, how they intend to do it, their supervising STs contact information, and any part of their character sheet necessary to conduct the proxy. This sort of proxy includes characters entering the city to have a scene and then leaving, or characters using disciplines such as Superior level Auspex to observe things in the city, or to communicate with characters within the city. At the CSTs discretion and convenience, the 48 hour rule may be waived. This is the safest form of proxy, as it is the least likely to have negative consequences on your character. Though depending on what occurs, the CST may require that a Soft Proxy turns in to another type of Proxy. If this occurs, the CST will notify the player and the supervising ST of the player of the circumstances that caused the type of proxy to change.
Standing Proxy This occurs when the PC will be proxied within the city for a period of time longer than one game, or one night outside of a game. Updated character sheets need to be sent only when the character leaves and returns to the city. The player will notify the CST any time the character enters or leaves the city, or any time that the characters standard habits or activities change. It is understood by the player that in the event of combat or other scene, the ST will run the character according to the last information and instructions given, so it is to the players advantage to keep things up to date. As with other proxies the player can expect any changes to character sheet, methods, or location to not take effect for 48 hours, though this time can be shortened or waived at CST convenience and discretion. Yes, this means that if you want your character to leave the city right this second, he may not be able to actually leave for 48 hours. This is to keep characters from expecting instant changes, when there may be timing issues regarding other characters. The CST will make every effort to make such lags make sense within the time continuity, and to use them for the benefit of the story and the players.
Temporary Proxy This type of Proxy occurs when a character should be involved in a scene, but for some reason the player can not, but the character has been properly checked in, and approved by the CST. In this event, the player will physically give their character sheet to another player or ST, and give them instructions on how the character should react. That player or ST will then play the character to the best of their ability, engaging in any requisite challenges for the character. This type of Proxy will end at the time designated by the player at the time of the Proxy. This is the only type of Proxy that does not require 48 hour notification, because the player had already checked in the character. The player does need to notify the CST that he or she is proxying the character, and who will be running the proxy.
Extremely high. The area surrounding Lawrence should be considered both Lupine and Sabbat territory. Particularly the Sabbat are north of the city, and the Lupines are South, though the do occasionally skirmish with one another. Characters traveling in to, out of, or through Lawrence and its surrounding area may be interdicted by hostile forces at the discretion of the Lawrence ST staff. Visiting players should be prepared to discuss with the ST how their character arrived safely in the city. With the consent of the Lead Storyteller of Topeka or Kansas City, Lawrence STs may run scenes at Topeka or Kansas City games regarding characters that traveled through Lawrence to get to Topeka or Kansas City.I-70 is generally considered the safest (and fastest) way in to, out of, or through Lawrence, due to its high traffic volume. However it is also known to be watched by hostile forces, and has toll booths that may provide hazard for the unwary.
Lawrence also has one Commercial rail line, and one Passenger rail line through the city, a small commercial airport, and a river running through the city. Any of these may provide transportation, and may be safer or more dangerous than the highway, depending on local conditions.
Travelers are encouraged to not travel alone, and to make contact ahead of time with local primogen or allies so that the must up to date information on hazards can be obtained, and so that at least someone will expect you, and they can know when to send out the search parties for your remains.
Visiting characters with either Camarilla Lore x4, or at least 4 traits of Camarilla status will have been able to contact the Harpy or Harpies IC and obtain the IC location of the game, unless the STs have been notified otherwise. (Such characters are still encouraged to make IC contact prior to the game time.) Any character not possessing either of these items will have to make other arrangements for obtaining the information of the IC location prior to character check-in.
Characters from other domains and chapters must have a signed copy of their character sheet that is approved for play by their storyteller. Any allowances made are solely up to the venue lead.
Characters entering from other domains are subject to the same risks as the PCs that are located in Lawrence.
Post-mortem messages:
If a visiting PC has a dead-drop (dead-man switch message) and the death occured here, then the Lawerence ST must be consulted by the presiding storyteller before the message is sent. To help with this, when and if a visiting PC dies, the local ST will contact the PC's presiding ST after the death. This allows for a number of positive effects. (a) The Lawrence ST can have material prepared for investigations if they occur (b) This also assures that no inappropriate information concerning the death scene is included with the death message.
Please note that any sort of dead-man-switch message must be pre-approved by the PC's storyteller. For the regional policy on such messages, please see: http://www.geocities.com/ncrst/policy/policy-deathmessage.html.
With the approval of both the ST of Lawrence, and the supervising ST of the character, a character from a different chapter may reside within Lawrence, and will then be treated as a Lawrence character for purposes of influences, haven, etc If this character is from a different Domain or Region, it will also require the approval of the players DST/RST, as well as the DST/RST over Lawrence. For such a character, the CST of Lawrence will be treated as the supervising ST. Any special approvals for the character will require the approval of the STs over both Lawrence, and the place of origin of the player.
All characters are required to have resources, retainers, contacts, allies or other backgrounds that may apply to immediately affect a game situation. If a character from another Chapter or Domain wants to affect Lawrence with influences, the player must contact the CST of Lawrence as well as their own supervising ST at least one week prior to any game effect that they wish the influence expenditure to have.
XP awarding is unaltered from Laws of the Night Revised, p122, except for a base award of 2xp. (Base 2xp per game, with additional xp for exceptional roleplaying, etc.)Two XP per month is possible with downtime reports submitted to the storytellers for a character that was active that month. (This activity does not necessarily have to be at a game, but does have to be considered significant by the STs.) The awarding of the XP for downtime is solely at the storyteller's discretion.
One XP per month may be awarded to a character by the ST for interaction taken place on IRC. The player should send a description of the interaction, how it furthers character or plot development, and logs of the roleplay, with the request for XP. See the IRC guidelines http://www.jyhad.net/tremere/irc/ircfaq.html#xp.
A character may not gain XP via IRC or downtime reports for two consecutive months in which no games were attended, unless there is a situation approved by the ST which prevents the player (not the character) from attending games. In any case, characters will not earn XP outside of games unless the ST believes that they are both contributing to, and being involved in, the global game.
The XP award for the night can be reduced per character at a game for a reason as determined by the ST.
Initial blood pool test is unaltered from LotNRev p106. The venue lead may vary the results of the test due to unusual situations. In lieu of an initial blood test, the player may present the CST with a brief (one minute or less) description of how the character fed on the way to the gathering that evening. Taking this in mind, the ST will do a test with the player (either a simple test, or a discipline test, if the character used a discipline to feed), and inform the player of how many blood traits they start the game with.
Influence use and rules are as stated in Prime, but the following rule is added: To reflect the limited amount of kine resources availible for Kindred control, each type of Influence shall have a cap of the highest level of Influence availible to a character within Lawrence. There shall only be one character (PC or NPC) allowed to hold that level of influnce. For any level of influnce other than the cap, a number of characters (PC or NPC) may hold that level of influence equal to twice the number availible of the next highest level. (ie. If the Cap is 7, there shall be one 7, two 6s, four 5s, eight 4s, etc... availible for acquisition and control by characters.) The Caps for Influences shall be as follows: Bureaucracy: 8, Church: 7, Finance: 8, Health: 8, High Society: 7, Industry: 7, Legal: 10, Media: 10, Occult: 8, Police: 9, Poltical: 9, Street: 10, Underworld: 8, University: 10, Transportation: 9.
Venue antagonists are defined as typical packs of Lupines and typical packs of Sabbat. If you have not provided a haven write-up for the storytellers then your character is not assumed to have taken any precautions to defend their haven, and to have a standard house as defined by the CST. For your character to have a specific haven it must be included in a haven writeup and approved by the CST, perferably included in brief on your chracter sheet, and be accessible to the presiding ST. Be sure to ask about what resources and influences your character will need to spend to create and maintain the haven.
If a character has zero permanent willpower, they frequently find it difficult to decide to do anything. At the narrator's descretion, they may disallow a character in that state from initiating certain challenges.
Gear: Incindiary devices, explosives, and special ammunition are more difficult to get than in reality; we use the availability published in Prime. Firearms can be openly purchased by any individual with a drivers license and no felony record (but the weapon will be registered.) Firearms can be openly carried, but will likely draw harassment from the Police. Pointing a gun at someone or intimidating them with it, is Assault with a Deadly Weapon. A license to carry a concealed weapon can be obtained with with a particular influence action. Ordinary firearms can be more or less anonymously purchased from private individuals with no use of Influence, but unusual firearms require use of Influence, because ordinary private citizens are unlikely to have them.
All characters must have item cards signed by an ST to use for objects in a game. Cell phones and pagers are exceptions to this rule, as are any props that the character actually has (leather jacket, pad and pen, etc) and are based on PC desire to have these items. The storyteller may also deny an item based on its unusual nature or its ability to unbalance the local game.
For characters that live in Lawrence, unless the STs are notified otherwise, the Harpy or Harpies are assumed to contact all kindred with the status traits of Acknowledged or Tolerated with information on the IC location of the game. Any character not possessing one of these traits will have to make arrangements IC to discover the IC location of the game. This information should be supplied to the ST/Player during check-in/feeding test.
At the discretion of the CST, any diablerie which the ST feels was motivated by OOC knowledge, information, or motive, including but not limited to: knowledge of MC, and of the time in play/XP earned by the character will automatically partially fail in the fourth stage, resulting in the death of the victim, and all normal consequences of diablerie, but with no lowering of generation. The diablerie will be treated as if the character had diablerized someone of the same generation. The CST may also enact or recommend further disciplinary actions if appropriate.
Mortality notes:
- Putting a vampire into torpor is generally treated as Accidental Killing due to the inherent danager of the state.
- Ordering the death of a person is considered premeditated.
- Torture is listed as a "tool" that will not cause a test at Humanity x2; in Lawrence it will cause a test at Humanity x3.
- Engaging in the Jyhad or Camarilla politics requires frequent acts that are considered 'Selfish Thoughts and Actions', 'Theft' and 'Causing Injury (in some sense.)'.
