Overhaul your Distributor

Retuning from the scrap yard again with a new toy - a distributor from a SE5a that externally looked realy grubby.

On inspection however it had cam lobes that had clearly seen little wear and a shaft that had no play that I could see.

Pretty darn grimey

A strip down was a journey that I like to take with pictures to aid reassembley

Took a wire brush to the externals Look how sharp the lobes are - mine is rounded loads.

Some parafin and a stiff brush took a lot of grime away

Quite sticky too - the two springs come in seperatley, light one all the time and the heavy one at high revs.

Especially in here, where some serious muck had accumulated.

Clean dry and oil sparingly all moving parts.

The ultrasonic bath helped too - and the sand blaster on the vaccuum unit.

Been caught by this one before - the conncetion between the sliding plate and the earth of the engine is a critical but nebulous thing.

If it's not obvious - from the points non sliding screw to the top plate/body screw.

Supplement it with an extra flexible piece of wire like this.
