Readers Workshop
What is Readers Workshop?

Readers Workshop takes place in Room 43 from 1:20  to 2:00.  This a time for children to self-select their own literature.  This is an important part of our literacy program because it allows the children to choose from a wide range of literature, practice strategies, and develop fluency by rereading books that they love!  I first teach a short mini-lesson, then Mrs. Munger and I work with them in choosing a "just right" book, modeling appropriate reading behavior, and learning how to use the Reading Hand to figure out those tricky words.
As the year goes on and we become more proficient readers, we will "dig deeper" and begin to make important connections with the texts we read.  We will do some special projects also.  I have found Readers Workshop to consistently be a First grader's favorite part of the day because through choice they are building confidence and motivation to read. They enjoy reading books of their own choosing and sharing those with friends.  We trust and guide them with their selection of books so that they can then learn to trust themselves as readers.

What do we read?

During Readers Workshop we read labeled book tubs from our Book Nook, leveled books from the guided reading table, big books, old morning messages, words around the room and the pocket chart.

You can enjoy some pictures below that were taken during our Readers Workshop!
You will notice students in our class reading independently, reading with partners and recording their schema (connections) with books on sticky notes.
