HOMEWORK
Students should spend no more than 15-20 minutes on homework nightly.  Homework is a review of lessons we have already learned in class, so your child should not be getting frustrated!  If your child has difficulty with homework, take this opportunity to help your child by re-reading the directions and showing them how to do the assignment.  Do not do their work for them!  Also, please let me know if they are having difficulty so I will be able to re-teach the skills as well!  It is a good idea to go ahead and get your bookbag packed and ready for the next day.  This will hopefully relieve some stress in the mornings.

                                           TIPS

Your child's spelling words should be practiced nightly.  It is a good idea to say them, spell them, and write them.

While doing nightly reading, ask questions about what your child has read.  What happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story?  Who are the characters?  What is the setting? Why do you think the author wrote this story?  Does this story remind you of anything that has happened to you?

Things to do if your child has difficulty with a word:
                                    Look at the picture.
                                 Does it make sense?
Get your mouth ready to say the word.
                                  Does it look right?
                                 Look for chunks (c

It is very important that you and your child try to establish a consistent routine for homework.   They will probably need a snack and a few minutes to unwind and "recharge" before they begin.  Make sure that your child has a quiet, comfy place to do their homework.  Also, have materials available for them:  paper, pencil, crayons.  Take a look through their homework folder and their papers.  Be involved and encourage them to do their best.  Remember, if it's not important to you, do you think it will be important to them??
