2nd Grade Competency Goals and Objectives Dear Parents, Listed below is the second grade state curriculum that will be taught this year. We will often overlap in some areas and some are ongoing. The language arts goals will continue to be developed throughout the school year. For science and social studies we will check the goal that will be taught for the 9 weeks. Number sense, numeration and numerical operations 1.15 Model 2 digit addition and subtraction using manipulative and alternative strategies; record and explain 1.16 Memorize addition and subtraction facts up to 18 1.17 Add 2 and 3 digit numbers with and without regrouping 1.18 Use addition/subtraction strategies to solve problems Spatial sense, measurement and geometry 2.10 Sequence months; use the calendar to solve problems 2.11 Tell time to the nearest half-hour using digital and analog clocks; record. Solve problems related to time 2.12 Determine the value of sets of coins (pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters); record using appropriate notation 2.13 Make different sets of coins with equivalent values 2.14 Identify coins needed to buy items priced at $1.00 or less 2.15 Solve problems using money. Estimate costs & make change using coins up to $1.00. Language Arts (These skills will continue to be developed throughout the year.) Reading: *Develop use of phonics *Recognize high frequency & vocabulary words *Develop an understanding (comprehension) of what they read orally and silently *Comprehension will be checked by one or more of the following assessments: oral questioning, worksheets, tests or appropriate activities such as acting out, art work, etc. *Develop independence in reading *Examine author's choice of characters, language and format *Accelerated reading with computer test Writing *Develop standard spelling in their written products (stories, letters, journals) *Develop writing skills which Include punctuation, capitalization and composing complete sentences *Plan and compose written products Science The appropriate goals are starred for this nine weeks. **Goal I - Plants and Animals Goal 2 - Changes in Weather Goal 3 - Changes in Properties (i.e. Matter, motion and force) Goal 4 - Concepts of Sound Health: **Goal I - Health-promoting behaviors Goal 2 - Stress Management **Goal 3 - Protecting Self and Others **Goal 4 - Relationships **Goal 5 - Nutrition/Weight Management Goal 6 - Substance Abuse Social Studies The appropriate goals are starred for this nine weeks.
