Latin I is a study of the basic grammar of the Latin language with many opportunities to translate increasingly sophisticated passages.  Three declensions of noun and adjective forms and the four conjugations of verbs in the indicative and imperative moods, as well as prepositions are the focus of study.  Students will learn songs to help with remembering the forms.  They write both individual and group translations every week.  The text is the Oxford series.

The second major component is vocabulary.  Students learn approximately twenty words per week with emphasis given to their English derivatives.  They play word games to review and keep their vocabularies current.  A "phrase of the week," Latin which is still met in English writing, (e.g.,
tempus fugit)  is required.

Through lectures students learn about an aspect of ancient Roman culture each week (e.g., housing, marriage, the baths), and a prominent figure in Roman mythology.  They also read and summarize ten pages of parallel material about ancient Rome written in English (!) each week.
