THE FUGITIVE SLAVE LAW
INTRODUCTION
For three days you must walk where you have never been before.  You must assume the role of either a Slave from Africa, an Abolitionist, a Slave owner, or a Politician during the year 1850 (Click on the pictures below to make your choice).

Keep these facts in mind as history takes you through this journey:  Slave trade has been halted but incidences of runaway slaves are on the rise.  Abolitionists are daring to go to jail and or be killed for their beliefs concerning slavery.  Slave owners view slaves as property and need cheap, strong labor fast and are not thinking about the working conditions.  Politicians want to keep their jobs popular or not.

The objective is to enable you to place yourself in someone elses "shoes" and focus only on their point of view so that you can gain understaning of how this event in history shaped or reshaped history.

TASK and PROCESS

Using the resources provided, you will write five diary entries from the perspective of one of the people mentioned above.  Your diary entries should include factual historical names, dates, places and information as well as your personal feelings about America during "slavery" in 1850, and opinions concerning what you "see" during your Webquest.

You are required to visit the sites that are given to you as resources on the specific pages.  You do not have to read ALL of the information that is shown.  Please take notes so that you may jot down "things" of interest, reactions and your feelings, so that you will not forget them later when you complete your diary entry.

The completed diary will be no larger that 8 X 11 inches but can be as small as 5.5 X 4 inches (or anywhere in between).  You must design the diary so that it has an old and weathered look (I will have examples in the room).  Your journey will take you as far as you allow it.  Remember to be ready for anything history may throw at you!  Arm yourself with knowledge!  Enjoy your journey, and I will see you when you return.

Coming Back Together

When you return on the fourth day, you will be grouped according to the role you chose.  After sharing your diary entries with your group, you will then design a PowerPoint presentation highlighting 5 diary entries, complete with pictures and quotes from your research.  Bacically, you will recount the journey for the whole class through presentation.

EVALUATION
Your final grade will depend upon the following criteria (20pts each):
*The use of specific vocabulary necessary to convey the spirit of the role you chose.
*The documentation of the facts you have discovered in your research.
*The level of your creativity and originality ("look" and information in the diary).
*The PowerPoint Presentation slides selected from the group.
*The actual presentation of your PowerPoint to the class.
