Procedures: A Way of Life
Jon LaChance

Procedures are a way of life. We follow procedures for using a telephone book, boarding an airplane, approaching a traffic light, and attending a wedding. The reason we have procedures in life is so that people can function in society knowing the acceptable and efficient ways other people do things.

There are also procedures in this classroom. These procedures establish our classroom culture. They are as follows:

BEGINNING OF CLASS PERIOD: This is the time to sharpen pencils, check for books for this class, check for notebook for this class, get out pencils, pens and notebook or paper. Start to work on your daily bell work/ or writing assignment. If you have to borrow a book from me, you will receive a zero as a quiz grade.

WHEN TARDY: You are tardy if you are not in your assigned seat when the bell rings. I follow the school policy on tardiness. Check the handbook if you have any questions.

DISMISSAL AT THE END OF THE CLASS: You are to remain in your seat until I dismiss you. The bell does not dismiss the class, the teacher dismisses the class.

WHEN YOU ARE ABSENT: When you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed. The following procedures are followed in this class regarding make-up work:
1. Admit slips must be put on my desk upon arrival to class. If you do not have your slip you will be sent to the control room to get it. That will count as an unexcused tardy in my class.
2. Your missed assignments will be on your classs clipboard in the front of the classroom. You are responsible to make up all missed assignments!
3. If you have any questions you can ask me before or after class. All assignments not made up within one week, will become a zero!
4. If you are absent on the day of an announced test or a project due date, then you are expected to take the test or turn in your work on the day you return to school.

RESPONDING TO MY REQUEST FOR ATTENTION: When I am talking or need your attention, you are to stop what you are doing and give me your full attention.

WHEN YOU NEED MY ASSISTANCE: Raise your hand and I will come to your desk and assist with the problem.

LISTENING TO AND RESPONDING TO ??S AND CLASS DISCUSSIONS: Please raise your hand quietly and wait to be recognized by the teacher before answering a question or adding to the discussion. Only one person will speak at a time, it is disrespectful to do otherwise. Please allow others to add to the discussion. We will all have a chance to speak on a topic.

WHEN YOU NEED A PENCIL/PAPER: I always have writing materials for the students. If you need a pen, pencil, or paper, raise your hand. I will rent or sell you what you need. Pens and pencils are 25 cents to buy, or if you cant afford it you can borrow one. You must give me something of value until you return my pencil.

SHARPENING PENCIL: If you need to sharpen your pencil, get up and sharpen it quietly, without messing with other students.

HEADINGS ON PAPERS AND TESTS: should look like this:
                       Complete name                                  Jon Lachine
                       Complete date                                    August 7, 2003
                       Course                                                Civics/ World History
                       Period                                                 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th

KEEPING YOUR NOTEBOOK: You are required to keep a notebook. The notebook should be a 3 ring binder with pockets. You will be required to keep all of your notes, handouts, tests, quizzes, and vocabulary. A test grade will be given every 2 weeks when I check your notebook.

COOPERATIVE GROUPS: Each person in the group will have a job that they are responsible for. The group will group grade, and each individual will receive a grade. As groups change, you will have different jobs. When physically moving into your groups, be as quiet as possible, and do not harass your fellow students.

IF THE PHONE RINGS: Everyone will continue to work quietly.

WHEN SOMEONE KNOCKS: everyone will continue to work quietly, or if I am lecturing, you will sit quietly as I answer the door. Please tell your friends that I do not allow visiting during class time.

SAYING THANKYOU: You should always say thank you to your classmates, and your teacher.

EMERGENCY ALERT: Fire drills, tornado drills, or any other drills: we will follow the school guidelines. I will go over these in class.

PROGRESS REPORTS: These will be given out at the end of class. All progress reports signed by a guardian and returned the next day will receive a 100 to use on a quiz.

CHECKING OUT CLASSROOM MATERIAL: To borrow reading books, reference books, color pencils, ECT. Please use an index card to write your name, date, item or title of the book, and give it to me at the end of class. Please return all borrowed materials the next day unless you have permission to keep the material longer.

BATHROOM PRIVILEGES: Bathroom passes will not be given in this class without a doctors note. Use your breaks and lunch time for the bathroom. If you have a real emergency come see me before the tardy bell for assistance.

GOING TO THE OFFICE OR LIBRARY, ECT: If the office calls you may leave without a pass. Otherwise, on an index card write your name, date, time, and destination. Then bring it to me and I will sign it. On your way out sign the log sheet.

KNOWING THE DAYS ASSIGNMENTS/FINISHING EARLY: It is your duty to know the daily assignments. They will be written on the board. If you finish early, do homework, study vocabulary, or I can give you extra credit. There will be no sleeping in class, or reading personal material. I will take any unauthorized materials.

WHEN AN ANNOUNCEMENT IS MADE: Stop what you are doing, and listen to the announcement. I will not repeat anything that is said on the intercom.

VISITORS OR SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS: If we have a guest speaker or I am absent. The guests will be treated with the same respect that you are given and that you show to me.

REMEMBER IF YOU BREAK A CLASSROOM PROCEDURE YOU WILL BE TREATED JUST AS IF YOU BROKE A CLASSROOM RULE
