This is an E-O-C class                                                                          

 

Students in English I explore the ways that audience, purpose, and context shape oral communication, written communication, and media and technology.  While emphasis is placed on communicating for purposes of personal expression, students also engage in meaningful communication for expressive, expository, argumentative, and literary purposes. We will follow the competency goals for English I as stated in the NC Standard Course of Study. (We will Express, Explain, Examine, Create, Demonstrate, and Apply)

 

 

Grading:  Tests/Papers=50%                  Quizzes= 25%   Homework/Class work= 25%

 

Students who commit to the following, WILL succeed:

  1. Come to class prepared (do assignments)
  2. Engage in the lesson
  3. Master the weekly vocabulary/literary terms
  4. Keep an organized notebook and file everything
  5. Read all selections and make connections through written/oral response

Week 3             continue epic poem/EOC review/writer’s workshop

Week 4             continue epic poem and test

Week 5             Progress Reports/ Short story Genre

Week 6             Life Lessons theme: Begin Tears of a Tiger and test/writer’s workshop

Week 7             The Power of Love theme: Begin Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet

Week 8             continue play/EOC review

Week 9             Finish play and test/writer’s workshop *End of grading period

Week 10           Report Cards/  Matters of Life and Death theme:

Begin novel To Kill a Mockingbird

Week 11           continue novel and test

Week 12           Cultural theme: Begin House on Mango Street

Week 13           continue novel/EOC review/writer’s workshop

Week 14           Poetry genre

Week 15           Progress Reports/ The Mysteries of Life theme:

Begin play The Miracle Worker/writer’s workshop

Week 16           continue play

Week 17           continue play and test/begin small research

Week 18           EOC review/small research paper

Week 19           EOC review/small research paper

Week 20           E-O-C (Exams)
