A Little Background About
Mrs. Roberts
August 2007 makes eight and a half years that I have been teaching.  I enjoy teaching.  I enjoy learning.  I probably learn as much from students as they learn from my classes.

Before I became a teacher, I worked for a major telecommunications company in Wake Forest.

I attended East Carolina and UNC-Pembroke.  Currently, I am working on a master's degree at the University of West Alabama.  I am certified to teach Social Studies and English and Theatre.

You may wonder about the origin of my maiden name.  Consider this a lesson in U.S and N.C. history that is often ignored.

Oxendine is an Anglo-Saxon name that originated in the Kent area of England. It literaly means "oxen dining on a hill."  Some of the variations of the name are Oxendeon and Oxendean.

In the 1700s, Scots arrived and settled in what would become Scotland, Cumberland, Hoke, and Cumberland counties.  There they found a tribe of "Indians" who spoke Elizabeathean English, lived in European style houses, wore European style clothes, and farmed like the British.
Many of these "Indians" had blond, red, or brown hair.   Many of them had blue, green, hazel, or grey eyes.
They told the Scots that their ancestors had lived at the coast and had moved inland to escape the threat of other warring tribes and the Spanish.

This tribe is now called the Lumbee.  The Lumbee Tribe has never been on a reservation.  It is the largest tribe east of the Mississippi and the ninth largest in the U.S.

I am patriotic and not ashamed of it even when my govenrment drives me crazy.

I do not litter.  I signed a pledge when I was in the third grade and I have kept my pledge.  The inside of my car may look awful but I will not contribute to the litter problem.
I recycle whenever possible and I drive a car that averages 34 mpg on the highway.
I do not shop at a certain store chain except when I visit my parents and my parents have me go there for them because it is about the only store in my hometown.
On Valentine's Day 2007 I ate my last chocolate.  Unless it is fair-trade chocolate I do not eat it.  Child slave labor is used to harvest and process the sweet.
