Poetry by Me
Half a Sound
Since birth my world has been different,
Different than most people's,
I only hear about half of what everyone
Else hears in this noisy world.
Since birth, I have not heard anything
Via my right ear.
Since birth, I have only used half
Of a set of headphones.
Since Kindergarten, I have had a scar on my  right side
Where the doctors used a piece of rib in the  operation
Done at Duke Children's Hospital.
Since then I call myself fortunate because
I have not had to endure ridicule, teasing, or  taunting
Because of my difference, my handicap.
Since birth I've never known anything different
So I have no idea what, if anything, I'm  missing.
I don't see myself as being different
I am always willing to answer any questions
For anyone who has them.
I Am From...
I am from farms and fields,
From blue and geese kitchens.
From Christmas baking,
Christmas Eve vegetable soup, and
Easter Pig Pickin's.
I am from pink and yellow tea roses, tree  houses,
And a horse swing called Wildfire.
From cats, dogs, parakeets,
Hamsters, fish, and hermit crabs.
From camping and trout fishing,
Cub, Boy, and Girl Scouts.
I am from hot summers and cold winters,
Blue-tailed skinks and white-tailed deer.
From cartoons and classic television,
Star Trek and everything else sci-fi.
I  am from Firemen's Days, family reunions,
and BBQ chix plates.
From fire alarms and parttime jobs;
Morning Meals-on-Wheels routes and
afternoon paper routes with Mom.
Land of the Lost and "Hot Cheeses"
Saturday morning biscuits from the Rockside,
I  am from Grandma Vaughan's cancer and Papa's diabetes,
From Garner and Warrenton,
From Southern Nash County and Boone,
And everywhere in between.
