My Internship at Crossnore Elementary
In my Block II class in the Fall of 2004, my internship was at Crossnore Elementary in Avery County.  I was placed with the fifth grade classes.  I was with two classes because the teachers, Mrs. Martha Hicks and Mrs. Pat Hopper, team teach.  What that means is that Mrs. Hicks teaches Reading and Social Studies while Mrs. Hopper teaches Math and Science.

While I was at Crossnore, the fifth grade went on a field trip to Fender's Corn Maze in TN.  Since the trip was planned for the first day of ASU's Fall Break, I had the opportunity to go.  I've never been to a coarn maze before and it was a lot of fun. I got to just hang out with a group of students and some parents who came along as chaperones.

While I was in these classrooms, I worked mainly with individual students or small groups.  I had several projects and lesson plans to teach in the classroom for some of my classes.  One of these was that I wrote and taught a Literature Circle on the Lewis and Clark Expedition to a group of 5 students.  I used the book The Journal of Augustus Pellitier.  This book is one of the My Name is America series.  In this literature circle, my students worked on their vocabulary, poetry, research, summarizing, asking good questions, and I was able to integrate this literature circle with my Social Studies lesson plans.

The Social Studies lessons that I wrote for my CI 3110 class are all about the Lewis and Clark Expedition.  In using these lessons in my own classroom, I will use the above mentioned literature circle along with them, as companion lessons. I am working on writing my lessons so that the Social Studies unit will end about the same time as the literature circle.

I also wrote and was able to teach Math lesson plans on measurement and converting measurement.
