Lewis and Clark Expedition
Day One
Grade: 5th
Time: 1 Social Studies period (45 min to an hour)
Objective: Students will gain a deeper understanding of how unknown the land of the Louisiana Purchase was to the American people in the early 1800s. They will also have an understanding of just how many discoveries were made by the Lewis and Clark Expedition as they traveled through the land.
InterestBuilding: The students will already be or are just about to start a literature circle that is about the Lewis and Clark Expedition. This lesson plan should be taught in conjunction, or as a companion, with the Lewis and Clark literature circle (can be found on my website).
Lesson Development: Day 1: Start      off with a KWL chart to determine what the students already know, or think      they know, about the Lewis and Clark Expedition. This is also so that you, as the      teacher, will know what they are most interested in learning about in this      topic.
Laying      the foundations for the lesson:
Louisiana  Purchase:
Talk to the students about how the United States came to own the Louisiana Purchase (map attached to end of lesson), who was involved in the selling and buying of this land: President Jefferson bought the land from Napoleon Bonaparte of France. (The names are linked to websites that have biographical information on these two men.)Show a      map      of the United States      before Lewis and Clark began their trip and talk to your students about      how no one knew what lay beyond the borders of the LA purchase.
Give      students the quiz found on this
website      (no grade will be given, just an illustration) and talk to students after      taking the quiz about how Jefferson and a majority of the American      citizens thought that many of these statements were true because no one      knew any better. Even some of      President Jefferson?s books had some of the quiz statements in them as      fact.
Summary and Assessment: Start  by allowing students to add to the L part of the KWL chart of what they      learned today. The teacher can ask      review questions and if the students answer correctly, then they get to      add that fact to the L part of the KWL.
Summarize      what has been taught and learned today by restating student answers in      this format: ?So you?re saying that?.? or ?I understand that you said?..?
Follow-up:
As you go through the rest of the Lewis and Clark unit (in Social Studies and Literature) have students keep track on a map as to where the Expedition is at the end of every lesson.
Needed Materials:
Chart      paper for KWL: one piece per part of the chart with wall space to display      them together throughout the unit.
Either      copies of Louisiana Purchase map for      students or an enlarged copy on overhead, smartboard, etc. for all      students to see.
Copies      of the map of the US      before the Lewis and Clark Expedition returned from their journey.
A copy      of the quiz for the teacher to use in administering the quiz.
Integration:
Math: Students can use the facts that the Louisiana Purchase was approximately 828,000 square miles and that the United States bought it for $15 million dollars to find out how much each square mile cost. Then can use the fact that it was about 4 cents an acre to determine how many square miles is in an acre.
NC Competencies:
COMPETENCY GOAL 4: The learner will trace key developments in United States history and describe their impact on the land and people of the nation and its neighboring countries.

4.01 Define the role of an historian and explain the importance of studying history.
