What is
Accelerated Reader?
Accelerated Reader is a
voluntary reading comprehension program.
The goal of AR is to encourage students to develop a love of reading
by selecting books and reading alone or with someone to understand and enjoy
the story. |
HOW IT WORKS: Children
are encouraged and guided to select an AR book that can be read
independently. There are over 3000
titles in the AR program at Claxton.
Approximately 3320 are at preprimer and 1st grade reading levels. After reading the book, a student takes a
computer-generated comprehension quiz on the book. Various points are rewarded for correctly answering the
questions. Points are determined by
the level and length of the book.
Most picture books are worth 0.5 (1/2) point and longer beginning
chapter books usually 1 point (These are set by the company that developed
the program and cannot be changed).
For AR rewards to be given, children must keep a 70% accuracy rate. |
AR GOALS: Your
child’s goals will be set by his teacher.
Your child’s reading level will be taken into consideration when each
goal is set. |
AR REWARDS: Various
rewards are offered to children for earning points. A list of the rewards are on the Accelerated Reader Page. In addition, other short-term challenges
and rewards may be offered. A pizza
party at the Asheville Pizza Company is an example of one such additional
reward. At the end of the year, there
will be a celebration for all students who make their goal. Our “Super Celebration Sleepover” will be
for those who meet their specified goals. |
We strongly believe that
Accelerated Reader encourages students to become successful readers. We hope that your child will participate
in AR and have fun learning to read. |
