                                Discipline rationale

Educational research has shown that when a teacher spends class time
managing discipline problems, less teaching and less learning occurs.
Disruptive behavior is a primary reason for poor student achievement.
No student has the right to interfere with my teaching or another student's
learning.  Having said that, I do believe that every student is capable of
proper behavior!  Behavior is certainly a choice and all students at Dickson
will be taught and encouraged to make appropriate behavior choices.
My procedure for rules violations is to issue a warning first and then use a
"time out" if a second violation occurs.  The exception to this would be a
"time out" immediately if the violation is flagrant such as disrespect.
A child may be invited to rejoin the class if I feel they are "ready".  There
will be no re-entry if the original violation was flagrant.  I give our students
the benefit of doubt unless I'm convinced of inappropriate behavior.
I will notify the child's parent if repeated disruption is occuring.  An administra-
tion referral will be used for chronic misbehavior and issues of physical
violence.  Further, an administrator will be invited to parent conferences re-
garding behavior issues.  Your support in these matters is valued and critical.
I always welcome your insight and feedback.
