Social Studies
There is big news for high school social studies at Pender High School and Trask High School.  For 2002-2003, World History will be taught as a ninth grade course in place of ELP. ELP will become a tenth grade course. This means that 2002-2003 sophomores that have taken ELP will still take World History.  WIth two grade levels taking the same course, there will be many more sections of World History available.  Extra textbooks have been ordered in anticipation of this switch.  ELP will still be available to those students needing it for graduation.  This change is a proactive measure in preparation for a state-wide curricular reform iniative in social studies that will take place in 2003.  Topsail High School has already made this change.
2002-2003 is the adoption year for social studies textbooks.  Many textbook companies will be providing samples to schools.  Textbook presentations have been made. Each grade level will meet and decide on the textbook that will best aid our students in Pender County.  Textbook orders will be placed in January, 2003.
