Labour


The Dalit suffer oppression and humiliation at the hands of both caste Hindus and Muslims. They are evicted from the land they occupy, relocated at distant places and forced to work without due compensation. Bogus criminal cases are filed against the political activists among them. Their women are often molested, and the police ignore their complaints.’

The total labour force of Pakistan is approximately 37.15 million, 47 percent work in agriculture, 10.5 percent in the manufacturing and mining sectors and remaining 42.5 percent in various other professions. Most of them are contractual labour. Federal Labour Ministry, Daily Dawn June 30, 2006

The extent of bonded labour and child labour

According to ILO there were 1.7 million labourers living in the bondage in Pakistan and majority of them were landless tillers (haris) in Sindh who were working under the feudal lords. Kiln Workers
Torture
Saleem Masih a Christian kiln worker of Kahna Nau, Lahore was badly tortured by employer, accomplices and some policemen.Saleem Masih had asked the Brick kiln owner Farooq to close his accounts of advance and deduction according to the law. Farooq’s men and police arrested him from his house to the police station on May 31, 2006. The SHO and other policemen reportedly tortured him. The kiln owner also tortured him.

A number of brick kiln labourers assembled at the police station and demanded that Saleem should be set at liberty. The police released him, however refused to register a case against the culprits. Mazdoor Jidojuhd 8-14 June 2006



Killed by torture

Mohsin Sarwar a Christian brick kiln worker of Sheikhupura scrummed to injuries after torture by the kiln owner.

Mohsin’s father had been working at Ifrahim Bricks Company for past three years, but Mohsin did not like to become a kiln worker.

On July 9, 2006 Ibrahim, Muhammad Ali (kiln owners) and Sharif Rehmani (clerk) tortured him badly till he fell unconscious. When his family came they were not allowed to see Mohsin and insisted on taking him to the hospital. The family was told that he was admitted at Mayo hospital Lahore. They saw him in very critical condition. Mohsin passed away on July 12, 2006.

Medical report said that he died due to injured lungs, poison and severe injuries. Police arrested Sharif Rehmani whereas other two accused were at large.                                                       NCJP report

Nine kiln workers freed
A human rights activist filed a petition in Session Court at Toba Tek Singh. The court ordered police to recover kiln workers from the unlawful confinement of the kiln owners.The police recovered nine workers including three women, from the custody of three brick kiln owners named Shahbaz, Akbar and Liaqat. The Sessions Court set them free.                                                            Daily Dawn July 18, 2006
