Torture by police

1- Waris Masih - Faisalabad

Ejaz Ahmad (ASI), Sohail Mustafa accompanied with their five friends tortured Waris Masih and his family and threatened them to leave the locality on June 23, 2006. They were suspicious that Waris had been providing shelter to Haifa Bibi mother of Haroon Masih who had murdered their cousin Khalid Mehmood (constable).

Haroon Masih was reportedly involved in drug selling and cases of robbery. He had a dispute with his neighbor. On January 6, 2006 when Khalid was trying to make a compromise between two parties. Haroon gunned down Khalid. Later Haroon was also killed in a police encounter on June 20, 2006.

On June 24, 2006 Waris submitted an application to DPO against Ejaz Ahmad and his friends Waris Masih was told not to complain against the accused for beating him. This was called a compromise. NCJP Report

2- Patras - Lahore

Police arrested Patras resident of Sanda - Lahore when he was going to bazaar on the allegation that he had two bottles of liquor with him. When he denied the allegation Policemen Babar Shah and Gilani Shah beat him in the bazaar and then took him to the police station and tortured him (on the sensitive parts of his body) in presence of the SHO. They registered a false case against him alleging that he had two bottles of liquor with him.

After that the police went to the accused’s house, took away Rs. 7,000 in so called body. Medical reports proved that he had been tortured very badly, so his kidneys were damaged and marks of torture were also found at the sensitive parts of his body. The locals protested in front of the police station and demanded that the two police officers responsible for torture should be suspended. The police officials said that they were inquiring about the matter, but denied that the accused had been tortured.                                                                                   Daily Pakistan August 17, 2006

Arshad Masih died in police custody

On June 15, 2006 Arshad Masih resident of Mariamabad Colony Toba Tek Singh died in police custody. He was arrested in connection with a case of kidnapping a girl against his brother in-law. During investigation he could not bear the torture and died almost spontaneously. However the police officials said that he had a stomach problem and was allowed to go home after two hours interrogation, they also claimed that Arshad’s body had no torture marks. People killed by police

In the first six months of year 2006 police had killed 30 civilians including two women and 28 men were gunned downed and some died because of torture.               Daily Nawa-e-Waqt July 3, 2006

Illegal detention

On June 25, 2006 police arrested Tariq Masih resident of Christian Colony Chakwal with 136 bottles of liquor. Tariq told ASI Lal Khan, that these bottles were shifted in his car because the other vehicle broke down on the way and belong to the permit holders Asif Masih, Morris John, Naveed Masih, Emmanuel Masih, Jahangir Masih, Khalid Masih, Anwar Masih and Joseph Masih, but he did not listen to him, he was taken to the police station and was tortured by the police.

Tariq wrote an application to district police officer Chakwal and stated that police had tortured him and real number of bottles was 136 but police claimed 167, which was false.

Medical report proved that Tariq had been tortured. Allegations against the accused were not dropped till this report.                                                                                        NCJP report

Hindu journalists detained by intelligence agencies

On March 6, 2006 Mukesh Rupeta and Sunjay Kumar, a correspondent for the News International and Geo television network and a Cameraman were allegedly picked up by the personnel of the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) from their office in Jacobabad on the charge of filming Shahbaz Airbase, which is reportedly used by the US for operations in Afghanistan. No information regarding their safety or location was given. However, protests demonstrations broke out after June 20, 2006 prompting the ISI to hand over them to the Jacobabad police in the early hours of June 22, 2006.

The police registered cases against them under sections 419, 465, 471 of Pakistan Penal Code and section 3-A of the Official Secrets Act on charges of filming sensitive installations and preparing fake National Identity cards and passports. They were released on bail on June 23, 2006 by the Senior Civil Judge Jacobabad Qaiser Khan on the bond of 25,000 Rupees each. Amanat Sona – Azizabad

Amanat Sona and his two brothers were tortured by people of Baloch community on May 8, 2006. The reason was to grab the fertile land which was in the possession of Amanat from last 30 years. They took three brothers to the house of ex - Nazim of Union Council and tortured them for the whole night, they tored their rifle permit and took the papers of land from them. On May 9, 2006 they registered an FIR with the favour of SHO police station Chawk Sarwar Shaheed charged them of having illegal arms. Accused were behind bars till this report. NCJP report

Mastan Singh – Lahore

Ex President of Gurdawara Parbhandak Committee and Sikh leader Mastan Singh was given in physical remand for one day by the Judicial Magistrate Munnawar Hussain. He was alleged of misappropriating of 32 lacs funds raised for earth quake victims. The accused said that the authorities of Auqaf Department misappropriated the funds and that he was forced to resign from Gurdawara Parbhandak Committee and his membership in Auqaf board cancelled. Protest against police – Toba Tek Singh

Local Christians staged a protest against police for not registering an abduction case against Tehsil Nazim Asad Cheema along with his accomplices. They abducted Naib Nazim of Union Council Sarfaraz Rahat Masih, kept him illegal confinement and forced him to vote for a Naib Nazim candidate.

Chaudhry Amjad Warraich MNA Pakistan Muslim League (Q) assured the protesters that he would support them and condemn the Tehsil Nazim.                              Daily Dawn January 3, 2006
