Milan Italy
NEXT: Venice {final page of site}
A friend from Milan took us to this flower stand on our way to the park at the Castello Sforzesco. Lovely buildings from the art nouveau period are found throughout the city. Subways are available but charming streetcars also traverse the city.
Milan is a wonderful city to visit. It has been a great commercial center throughout its history. The Duomo is the city's most popular image. It is the largest Gothic ediface in Italy and is said to reflect icing on a  cake because of its 135 marble spires and 2,245 marble statues adorning the structure. Therefore, it is also known as the "Wedding Cake Cathedral".

The Piazza at the the Duomo leads to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuel.
The galleria has a glass topped, vaulted ceiling and is the most opulent enclosed shopping mall you will ever see. Many jewelry and clothing shops are found here that cater to the fashion conscious Milanese. One may stop for a late morning"expresso" or lunch at one of the elegant cafes.
The Galleria leads to the piazza where  La Scala Opera House is located. The opera season begins in November, however,  in October we were able to visit their museum. On the self-guided tour one is able to look into the beautiful theater from two of the gilded boxes. I was surprised to find how intimate the space of the theater acutally feels. I believe the Opera House is currently being restored, so call before you visit.
Leonardo's Last Supper can be found at the former Dominican monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Unfortuanatly, we were not able to visit but hope to do so on our next vist to "Milano".
