Originally located in New York. Enlisted in Federal Army. Placed in an
orphanage for a time. At 18 worked for Chicago And Eastern Illinois
Railroad as a brakeman in the switching yards of Princeton Indiana.
There he lost a leg. He then became an agent in 1874 and served that
position for 18 years. In 1892 he opened up a lumber yard, the first in
the community. He was married to Naomi J. Ott on March 14, 1875.
