Haubstadt, Indiana Pioneer:
Charles Karl  Riffert
The following document was retyped from an original given to me by my brother, James Robert Adler sometime in 1999. I do not know the origin, but the contents are similar to other documents I have come across. For instance I do have military records for Charles Riffert that confirm that he was field promoted to first lieutenant of Company 'F' after Chattanooga. I also have records of his being wounded in Texas.
I have tried to copy the records James gave me as they were. The 32nd Indiana Infantry Regiment (First German) saw serious action during the Civil War, including Shiloh, the siege of Chattanooga and the assault on Missionary Ridge.
1838 - Year Charles was born per the Ship Manifest, Civil War Records, and 1860 Census in Prussia.
1842 - Year Charles was born in Prussia according to the 1870 Census.
1846 ? Year Charles was born in Prussia according to the 1880 Census.
???? - Charels was born in Rhineland ? Palatinate near Mannheim according to the Family records of Rodney Riffert.
Problem: Rhineland ? Palatinate and Prussia are on opposite sides of Germany. Also, there is a six year age difference is the various records.
1854, Aug 24. Carl Reifert, age 16, arrived in New York from Havre (Le Havre in France. A busy port and common embarkation point for many Germans, particularly those from the PFALZ ? Rhineland area due to the trade route from Strasbourg to Nancy to St. Dizier to Chalons-Sur-Marne, to Chateau Therry to Paris and then down the Seine River to Le Havre.) Aboard the ship ?Meta? he traveled with Fredrik Reifert age 19. From Prussia, destination ? Indiana, occupation ? clerk. Volume 8 of ?Germans To America?.

1860, June 5.  Charles Reifert age 22 living in a boarding house in Huntington, Indiana. Born Prussia, occupation ? Barber? This data is per the 1860 Census of Huntington, Indiana.
1861, Aug 24. Charles Reiffert, age 23 enrolled in the 32nd Regiment Indiana Volunteers (First German Regiment) to serve 3 years by Captain Erdelmeyer at Indianapolis, Indiana. Served as Sergeant, First Sergeant.
1862, Nov. 4 Promoted to Sergeant Major per Index Card 4 of the Indiana State Archives and Civil War Enlistment records.
1863, March 17. Sergeant Major Charles Reifert mustered out to accept appointment as 2nd Lieutenant in Company K of the 32nd Indiana per Index Card 2 of the Indiana State Archives and Civil War Enlistment records.
1863, November 8. Charles F. Reifert age 26 was promoted to First Lieutenant at Chattanooga by Lieutenant Colonel Wells.
1864, May 27. Wounded at Dallas.
1864, September 7. Mustered out at Indianapolis Indiana. Index Card 1 of the Indiana State Archives and Civil War Enlistment records.
Charles F. Reifert First Lieutenant Company F, 32nd Indiana Regiment of the Indiana Volunteers, also called the First German Regiment and Organized in Indianapolis on 24 August 1861 mustered out on 7 September 1864 at expiration of term. Residence of Huntington. This is per the Report of the Adjutant General State of Indiana Vol. 2 1861 ? 1865.
?? ? Charles Riffert ? Haubstadt Resident and Civil War Veteran Picture in Haubstadt Centennial.
1867, September 19. Charles H. Riffert married Anna J. Pettijean per the Gibson County Marriage records.
1870, July 30. Charles Referd age 27, occupation ? Cooper, born Prussia, married to  Ann J. per the 1870 Gibson County Census.
1871 Charles Riffert owned lots 226 and 227 in Haubstadt per the Gibson County Accessors Book.
?? Charles Riffert operated a Cooper Shop.
1880, Feb 3. Carlus Riffert was married Barbara Newfeld, born with the name Barbara Ulsomer . His parents were Henry (Henrici) Riffert and Helina Klant. This data per the St. Peter/Paul Church Marriage Record. Gibson County Marriage records shows the year as 1890.
1880 July 12. Charles Riffert age 33, Occupation ? Cooper, Born in Prussia married to  Barbara , a widow born in Bavaria. This data per the 1880 Gibson County Census pages 238/240.
1901, March 9. Charles Karl Riffert died at Haubstadt, Indiana at the age of 55 years, 8 months, 7 days. Per the Gar Death notice in family album and Gibson County Death Records.
Tombstone in St. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Haubstadt shows the name as  Charles Karl Rueffert as does the stone in Locust Hill cemetery for his son Louis Rueffert .
