A moment like this

Written By: Paradise Kendra
Summary: Takes place during and right after season premiere, The Kids Are All Right. How Joey and Dawson handle the situation had one of them actually opened the door as they held the handle, both wanting to make contact and not have it be over.
Rating: NC-17
Comments: I wrote this first off because I was mad as hell at the way the season premiere ended, but I gotta say, regardless of the outcome, thank GOD they finally made love. But what angered me is how immature they both were. This was something stupid that happened, but understandable. Dawson did break up with his girlfriend immediately when he was with Joey, but didn’t tell her the truth. This is not the biggest crime of all, they could have worked it out. What’s screwing them this season is their pride, not their love. So it’s annoying as hell to me

---------------

[“You look great, by the way.”
She looked up at him, a little off guard at that comment but none the less, flattered.
“Thank you,” she said, the surprise in her voice evident.
“I don’t say things like that nearly enough, the second I saw you I thought to myself, God she looks great. But I didn’t say anything, so I’m saying it now.”
“This simply a routine you workshopped in LA over the summer?” she flirted.
He exhaled a laugh. “Can a guy not tell a girl she looks great without there being some sort of manipulation involved?”
“Generally no,” Joey said casually.
“Okay, good point. But…this is you and me. General rules do not apply to you and me.”
She couldn’t help but smile at that, she felt so at home, so comfortable, so good, sitting here with him. It was like no time had passed between them, they were where they’d always been, never having missed a thing. And yet…a whole summer had gone by.]

----------------

Humiliated, uncomfortable, scared and pissed off, Joey couldn’t pretend this was just a happy birthday anymore. She had to talk to him.

She stood up. “Excuse me for a second,” she said, going to the bathroom, grabbing Dawson’s hand and dragging him with her in the process.

With the door successfully shut she shoved him.

“You have a girlfriend?!? I slept with you last night and you have a girlfriend?!?”
Outside, Jen along with the others listened and cringed. “This is a very unhappy birthday.”
Pacey, Audrey, Jack, and Jen listened as Joey proceeded to shout more to Dawson than she probably wanted the rest of them to hear.

“I didn’t say that, I said I’d been seeing someone-“

“SEEING someone! What does that hell does that mean, Dawson?”

“I don’t…know. The point is Joey I broke up with her the second something happened.”

“HOW? How? In your mind?”

“First thing this morning, where do you think I went when I left?”

“I thought you went out for breakfast! I didn’t know you were getting up early to go breakup with someone else!”

“Would you rather I didn’t?”

“No! I would rather you weren’t involved with someone when we finally sleep together!”

“Joey, I’m sorry if this ruins the fantasy but this girl means nothing to me compared to you.”

“You should’ve told me!”

“When? Where?”

“Before!” she said, leaving the bathroom.

“Joey stop!” he said, following her to the room where the rest of them were.

“Why? Why stop now?” She turned to her friends. “Everyone here who thinks Dawson should’ve told me he had a girlfriend before he decided to sleep with me, raise your hand.”

The following females in the room timidly raised their hands.

“Blowing this way out of proportion,” Dawson said.

She was about to kill him when Jack interrupted.

“O-okay, maybe you guys should just take a breather for a moment, let cooler heads prevail.”

“Or we could just leave,” Pacey said, standing up, and had Joey not had steam coming out of her ears she would’ve burst out laughing at the way he said that.

“That’s a great idea,” Jack said, trying to round everyone up to leave.

“No I can’t,” Audrey said.

“Honey, now’s not the time,“ Pacey began.

“I’m sorry, I know that Dawson’s our friend too but I personally cannot leave until Joey says it’s okay.”

“It’s fine, Audrey,” Joey said.

“Okay, good,” she said, standing up and leaving.

As Jack road Jen like a choo-choo leaving the room, Pacey opened the door for them all and added one last final comment that also would’ve had Joey laughing any other time but this.

“Happy birthday Jo!”

“They are gonna rip each other senseless,” Jack said as the walked out.

“Let’s just go,” Pacey said, shutting the door behind them.

They were alone. Help them both.

“We didn’t talk at all this summer, which was your choice as much as it was mine-“

“So I asked you to lie to me?” she demanded.

“Joey…you and I both know that if either one of us and stopped and thought for even a second last night, that what we did never would’ve happened and I for one am not sorry that we did. If you are then that’s…that’s a complete separate argument—that’s actually a much bigger deal-“

“DAWSON! You have a girlfriend! How is that not a big deal?”

“HAD a girlfriend, Joey. Look, I’m willing to admit that the timing on this is far from perfect but—I’m sick of waiting for this so called perfect timing that’s—obviously never gonna happen for us.”

“Y-you’re right. You know it’s…better to just get it over with and move on. You know, slept with Joey just—cross that off my list of things to do!”

“You know that’s not how I think,” he confirmed.

“How do I know that, Dawson? I haven’t talked to you all summer, apparently you’ve changed so much that you’re willing-“

“You really think I’d wanna sleep with you and not want it to mean more Joey. You think I’ve been waiting all these years for us to have one night together and then go our separate ways?”

“Oh I’m sorry that you got sick of waiting Dawson, I’m sorry that I wanted our first time to mean something MORE than just-“

“It DOES mean more, Joey, it—I mean it—it means EVERYTHING to me, I-I don’t know what it means to you-“

“Oh you’re saying that I WANTED this to happen?” she asked incredulously.

“No! Cause that would involve you actually knowing what you want, which we both know is not likely to happen anytime this decade.”

“Oh, great. You know, use something I said when I was a child-“

“You’re still a child Joey. You’re still the same little girl who…” he trailed off.

Don’t stop now Dawson, come on, tell me exactly who you think you know SO well that it’s just fine to do this.

“Who what? Who what, Dawson? Who broke your heart? God, is the statue of limitations EVER gonna end on that one? EVER? Dawson, I’m sorry that I don’t have the same dreams I had when I was 15 years old, and I’m sorry that I moved on faster than you did, but you know what, maybe not EVERYTHING that happens to you is MY fault! And maybe just because I want more from my life that just-“

“More that what? Us? You don’t know, do you? You’ve never known. The entire time I’ve known you all you’ve wanted to do is escape. From me, from Capeside, and you say that I’m the dreamer, I’m the one who doesn’t wanna live in the real world well, I’m…doing it Joey. Right now. I’m living in the real world. It’s YOU who wants the fantasy.”

“I want the fantasy,” she repeated.

“Yes.”

“Who lit the candles? Who bought the champagne?”

“Who dumped who four years ago? Joey, I know what I want. I’ve always known what I want. Before we destroy…whatever chance we might actually have, at having a relationship, I’m asking you please, stop and think about this. Is this really what you want, is this really the way you want things to end between us?”

She stood in the bathroom, her hand over her mouth, crying so hard she thought she might vomit. Every dream inside her knew this was the moment, this was the crucial moment. She wanted Dawson, she’d always wanted Dawson. Was she a child or what he just an everyday asshole that will turn the situation around to make him look like the one who was right? In the whirlwind of all these thoughts, the tears finally ceased. She opened the door, he was sitting against her bed, she knew he was in as much pain as she was but she didn’t care.

They said a few empty sentences to each other about his plane trip, and then…he left, the door shut behind him. She turned back to the door so close to opening it, it physically hurt not to. She rested there for a few moments, somehow knowing his hand was on the other side. She felt him, and he felt her. Neither of them could do it…maybe it was fear, maybe it was anger, maybe it was just pain, but she felt his hand leave the other side of the handle. It was in her mind but as real as if she could see him through the wood. She imagined him, she saw him, she loved him…

Her hand left the doorknob. Everything that had been bundled up inside her since she first looked at Dawson rose up inside her, becoming free and roaming her body, killing her. Her nerves ached with the emotional realizations of all that had happened, all she’d fucked up, all she’d held so close to her and all that had slipped away from her. Everything she did she wished she could do again, and everything she felt in a moment that was perfect, it all flooded her in this moment. Her heart clenched in pain as she turned away from the door, wondering why he’d kept walking? Why didn’t he stop her from saying what she’d been saying and tell her?

It was her birthday and it was the day more than any other she wished she’d never been alive and here on this planet. She let go of the doorknob, tears threatening her as her weakened body turned from the door. Without her face changing expression, tears fell from her eyes. She remained still and suddenly her door burst open and Dawson grabbed her and knocked her up against the wall.

She had screamed a little in fear but now she was working on catching her breath as she looked into his eyes.

“Jesus Dawson, what are you doing?” she exclaimed, recovering from her near heart attack.

“I’m not leaving,” Dawson replied. “Joey, I can’t when things are like this.”

“Dawson, things are too much for us to talk about right now, I’m tired and-“

“No, you always do this, you run away or avoid the subject or anything else you can think of when it’s something you can’t handle that happens between us! We’re going to talk now, we have to.”

He was right, she couldn’t deal with it now, she would rather cut off her own arm than look at him once more tonight and not feel the pain of feeling unloved by him.

“Dawson,” she said, looking away. “You’ll miss your flight-“

“Screw my flight, this is more important and you know it.”

Meeting his eyes her glance grew angry and she shrugged his hands off her shoulders.

“Why Dawson? I’m still a child, remember? I have absolutely NO idea what I want so why don’t you go back to your life that you’ve figured out and just be thrilled that you finally slept with me and got it over with.”

Joey moved away from him but he grabbed her arm, stopping her.

“Joey, you know that’s not what I meant, why are you acting like I wanted to hurt you or use you by sleeping with you? You’ve known me all my life, how can you honestly think that?”

Joey sighed, knowing he was right in this case.

“You want the fantasy,” Dawson said as he grabbed both of her arms and shoved her against the wall, kissing her deeply.

Instantly she fought the kiss, her hands pressing against his chest to push him off, but he grabbed her wrists harshly and held it tightly as his mouth devoured hers, consuming all her passion bringing back memories of the dreams she’d shared with him. Backed up against the wall with her wrist straining in his grip, she tried to stop the kiss, but the pain overwhelmed her and she sobbed softly into his mouth.

“Stop it,” she said into his mouth, but lost her drive to stop him physically.

“Shh,” he whispered against her lips, a shudder going through her as his hand brushed her hair out of the way as the kisses began again, exhausting her.

Unable to fight him, her lips softened beneath his, and she kissed him back, moaning into his mouth as his lips swept over hers again and again almost in a worship of her. It was just like out of the movies after the couple had a huge fight and he slammed her up against the wall kissing her until she couldn’t breathe. It was the fantasy, but Joey, in Dawson’s arms got herself back to reality.

“Dawson stop!” she whispered breathlessly as she tore her mouth from his.

Realizing what he’d done he backed off. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to do that.”

She got her breath, placing her fingers over her passion swollen lips.

“I can’t,” she said to him. “I can’t think like this. I can’t believe you would…but why didn’t you tell me immediately, while we were talking at the restaurant? Why did you dance with me that way, look at me that way. That was more than a look a friend would give. Why didn’t you-“

“Because I wanted the world to be just you and me.”

“But it wasn’t, that’s the point! And it could’ve been. It makes me feel used to know you slept with me when you were WITH someone else and now to hear you tell me you think I’m just using this as an excuse because I don’t want to get too close to you?” she asked incredulously.

Dawson let go of arm but slid his hand down to hold hers.

“Can you blame me? You always do this, you always find a reason, Joey. You kissed someone else while you were with me-“

Joey shook her head. “No, Jack kissed me-“

“Whatever you call it. And then, you tell me how you need to find yourself and I discover you’re in love with my best friend!”

She looked away again, unable to face him, or the memory of her betrayal.

“How do you think that made me feel?” Dawson said, shaking her a little to get her to look at him. “Joey, my best friend, my life long friend, suddenly is the answer to all your prayers-“

“Stop it!” she said at him, not wanting to hear him say those words.

“Joey! How do you think it felt to know the two people I loved more than anything-“

“Is that what you think this is? Payback? Because I screwed you over you wanted to screw me only to shove it in my face that you went completely on with your life and you don’t need me?” she asked, her eyes flashing.

“What? No-“

“Because if that’s what this was-“

“It’s not! But Joey, you’ve got to admit, I haven’t always been able to get you, to understand you-“

She shook his hands off her shoulders and walked over to her bed.

“Okay, fine, you want me to explain a couple things, fine! Yes, all right? I didn’t know what was happening, you had finally kissed me and finally wanted me as more than your sidekick friend and Jack kissed me. And I didn’t push him away. I felt guilty as hell though and maybe it was because I hadn’t been repulsed but it wasn’t like I was desperately attracted to him after it or something. It was you, Dawson. It was always you. But I wasn’t everything to you, and you had a life in your mind apart from me. And yes, I did have to grow up. Growing up DOES include experiences. Pacey was an experience, I loved him but he wasn’t ever you.”

Anger still pooled deep inside Dawson that it was Pacey who she’d first been with, that it was Pacey she’d spent three months on a boat traveling with, that it was Pacey who held her all the times he’d wanted to, and most of all, it angered him that he saw their love.

“I know it eats at you,” Joey said, as if reading Dawson’s thoughts. “You know the line of ‘it just happened’ that we’ve seen in four hundred movies together that we both always think is crap? It is crap, but it’s also sometimes true. But what’s also true is that I never stopped loving you.”

Tears fell from her eyes as she looked at him with love. Dawson didn’t reply.

“You know maybe Jack was right,” she said, hoping Dawson would’ve responded by now. “Maybe we should just let cooler heads prevail.”

“Is that what you want?” Dawson asked which made her feel the fury in her veins. Why didn’t he tell her what she needed to hear? What the hell did he want from her? She was trying to tell him whatever the hell it was he needed to hear, couldn’t he see that?

“Is that what you want?” she replied. They stared in silence until Joey tore her gaze from him, sighing. “Dawson…you made love to me when you were with someone else. H-how am I supposed to feel about that?” she said, tears in her eyes as she looked up at him. “I don’t know if I’m doing or thinking what’s right so help me out here. If you really thought I should react better, then why were you afraid to tell me? Is it really because you see me as a child or because-“

“Joey, I don’t think you’re a child-“

“You just said I was a child! Because I want the fantasy. You did say it, not ten minutes ago.”

He sighed. “You’re right. I did say that. I don’t know how you’re supposed to react or what I was supposed to have done…all I know is what I already said. This girl means nothing to me, you mean…you’ve always meant everything to me and if you can’t see that-“

“Wait…stop. Why do you do that? Why do you begin by telling me how much I mean to you and then you turn around and make it MY problem? Dawson, this is both of us here, not one of us. I can see whatever you want me to see if you just tell me what it is you see, or what it is you want to see. Dawson I’m begging you, tell me.”

She was trying to give him every opportunity here and he wasn’t getting it. She saw the struggle inside him, she could feel the tension. They’d slept together three times in the last day and a half and now they could barely say anything to each other.

“I can’t make you see what you won’t, Joey,” he said.

She wanted to punch her fist through a door. He was being too realistic and not enough of a lover understanding what she would need to hear.

“You know what, I think you’re half right. We’re both children. We can know everything about each other as friends, as soulmates, but not lovers. I know you better than you know yourself but I can’t understand how to make you understand me and what I need anymore than you can.”

The phone rang. Joey jumped in surprise but didn’t want to answer it. Dawson stared at her, holding her gaze as the annoying phone rang its annoying ring. Joey leaned over and picked it up.

“Hello?”

“Jo, it’s Audrey, listen, did you get everything settled with Dawson because if you didn’t I’ll just spend the night at Jen’s cause I’m exhausted-“

“No,” Joey said. “No, you don’t have to do that.”

“You’re okay with Dawson? You’ve gotten it worked out?”

Joey looked up at Dawson and ran her fingers through her silky long hair.

“Yeah, pretty much,” she said into the phone. Hanging it up, she looked back up at Dawson. “That was Audrey…she’s coming back.”

“That’s okay, I’ll go,” he said, turning and walking towards the door.

He was praying she’d tell him to stay, that she did believe him and that this lie was forgiven and wouldn’t ruin them. But she didn’t. He closed her door behind him. Joey lied down on her bed, her hair spread out like a fan as she tried to process her thoughts. A few minutes later Audrey came in, babbling on and it wasn’t that Joey didn’t appreciate or love her dear friend, but Audrey wasn’t the best person to talk to about deep things even you don’t understand.

“Actually Audrey, I’m gonna go take a walk,” Joey said, getting up.

“Are you sure? It’s so late-“

“I’ll be back soon,” Joey said, running a brush through her hair and putting some lip-gloss on her lips.

“I can go with you if you-“

“No, get some sleep,” Joey said, putting on her leather jacket, taking one last look at herself in the mirror. She wanted to make sure she didn’t look like a girl who’d been crying. “I’ll be back soon.”

As Josephine Potter walked the streets in the middle of the night it suddenly dawned on her how stupid this was, how dangerous. How young women get kidnapped, raped and murdered mostly at this time of night and that she was walking around like she was advertising for one of those disgusting acts. However, it also dawned on her how sick it was that women her age, younger and older had to worry about that every time they went outside passed sunset.

And speaking of stupidity, why was she walking around when she knew exactly what she wanted to do? She had always been so rational and so good, now she was going to be impulsive and not think, just act.

He walked around the set, flipping the switch so the lights turned on. It looked so vacant, he knew if he dropped a glass and it shattered the sound would echo through the endless set. He’d been on the phone with his childhood idol, childhood obsession, even Joey couldn’t believe he’d said nothing other than hold on. What else had he not said? What else in his life was he focusing so much on he forgot the rest? Suddenly the lights turned off, then off again.

“I thought you might be here.”

Dawson turned to see Joey standing there, her fingers on the light switch. She looked…good. Her hair was soft and shiny, her posture very self-assured, her eyes staring into his. Her lavender shirt with her chic leather jacket made her look like she she just stepped out of a magazine. Seeing he didn’t know how to respond, she came down the few steps and into his house he had recreated and where they spent dinner together earlier. Her high-heeled platforms hit the floor and it was audible in the entire building.

“I uh…was just walking up and down the streets and realized that was dangerous so I just wanted to walk to a place I used to go as a kid and feel the safest and the happiest. This is real close to it,” she said walking up towards him. “Though it’s missing the top floor and a ladder.”

Dawson didn’t quite know what to say. He didn’t know what she was thinking. If she was forgiving him or waiting for him to say something brilliant or to just shut up and listen. She sensed that and smiled a little as she bent her head down.

“It’s weird. We know each other inside and out as best friends, as soulmates, we know how much chemistry we have and how deep a connection, but when it comes to being lovers we’ve been pretty clueless. So I’m just gonna ask one question, and then I’ll go.”

“What do you want to know?” he asked softly.

“Do I mean something to you? And I don’t mean as best friend or any of the other 500 things we could call ourselves, but when you said she means nothing to you compared to me, did you mean that? Do I mean to you what you once said I did? Everything?”

He reached up to hold her face in his hands and she flinched as the electric shock ran through her veins when he touched her.

“I wish to God you didn’t have to ask that. I wish you just knew.”

She loved him so much it hurt just to refrain from going straight into his arms. Tears were stinging the back of her eyelids as she licked her lips to gain the courage to ask the next question.

“Do you still love me? And if you do can you say it to my face?”

Ironically she was the one who looked away at that moment, reveling in the feel of his hands holding her, but afraid to see the look in his eyes when he responded to her question.

“Can you face me when I say it,” he replied, and she reluctantly did.

When he said the words the damn broke and a tear fell. But the tears didn’t continue to fall and what rose up inside her was something other than tenderness and promises that didn’t need to be made right now.

“All right, then I forgive you, and I believe you. And…I want you,” she said as she gripped his face and pulled it to hers as she gave him the kiss of a lifetime.

Wrapping her arms around him and pulling his mouth to hers, their mouths opened and their tongues lashed around each other as Joey lowered herself to the floor, pulling Dawson down with her. She pushed him onto his back, climbing over him, leaning down to capture his lips with hers. Running her hands up and down his chest she slid her lips back and forth over the contours of his, gliding her tongue over the seam of his lips, demanding he give her access. When he obeyed and raised up to meet her body, he crushed her parted lips to his, his hands finding her waist. They situated themselves so she straddled his lap. Ripping her jacket off her body she plunged her tongue into his mouth, her beautiful hands caressing his throat down to his shoulders.

She moaned against his mouth, causing a surge of desire to shoot through his veins and want her even more. Her insistent, sexual kisses exhausted them both so much they had to tear their mouths from each other’s to come up for air. Dawson’s hands roamed the steaming skin that her shirt hid, and he with the help of her hands as well, tore her shirt off, revealing her breasts in a simple, white bra, but already her breasts were taut with desire. Pushing her shirt away from her shoulders so it fell to the floor behind him, he took one of the thin straps to her bra in his fingers and pushed it down, suckling her skin as her hands crawled in his hair.

Joey’s mind felt drugged from passion as she tilted her head towards the ceiling a little and felt his hands sliding down her back, taking control of her skin. He pulled her body slightly more against his hard body, unhooking her bra and slowly edging it off her shoulders he continued to plunder her mouth with his. Joey inhaled quickly as he removed her bra, and she parted her mouth from his to slip her hands beneath his shirt and push it up and off his body. She then looked back at him, receiving his mouth as her naked body pressed against his chest. Her tightened nipples felt the friction of his skin against them with each kiss and thrust. She tightened her legs around his waist, the ache in her growing as the cool air met her sensitive flesh. Bending his head he kissed the tops of her firm breasts and crushed her against him keeping the heat between them. They kissed slowly, exploring the other’s mouth until she sighed into his mouth, coaxing him to push her off of him to the floor where he slipped his hands beneath the waist of her jeans, unbuttoning them. Stopping to look at her, she saw him about to ask if she was all right and pressed her fingers to his lips.

“Shh, don’t say anything, don’t ruin it,” she whispered, lunging to him to kiss him. “Kiss me,” she whispered breathlessly against him, and he fully responded. “Touch me, Dawson.”

At this moment she didn’t care if he’d married someone over the summer, she just wanted him and nothing would stop them right now. His lips brushed the side of her mouth, moving delicately down her jaw to her ear. She sighed and clutched to him a little for support in the awkward, entwined position they were in. He trailed butterfly kisses down her neck to the swell of her breasts, licking every part of the naked skin until her hardened nipples strained for more attention. He didn’t disappoint. Dawson’s tongue traced the sensitive tips, his warm breaths made her shiver. Lifting his face, he continued his possessive exploration of her face, dragging his lips down to her eyes, where he softly ran his burning tongue smoothly over her closed lids. Running his hand from her neck inch by inch to her breast, he cupped it swiftly, and she breathed into his mouth, her sigh of pleasure rippled through his body. He pushed her against the floor, her skin colliding with the cold.

Dawson’s fingers pressed and scraped the skin of her back as if branding it, and he drew her closer to kiss her more deeply. She kissed him back, she being the dominate one, the one calling the shots and not asking but demanding he touch her. She ravaged his neck with her determined lips and tongue, nipping the skin as she trailed down to his collarbone. Lifting her leg and wrapping it around his waist, Dawson pressed his hips into hers. Closing her eyes she slipped completely inside his passion. He dropped his head and found her nipple, teasing it with his tongue until it contracted and tightened. Cupping all of her breast and squeezing gently, he looked into her piercing eyes.

No words were needed, they could read each other perfectly, and desire overwhelmed any patience they might’ve had. Leaning down a little to engulf her lips, Joey curled her arms around his back, examining the toned muscles of his back, her mouth opening to him completely. Joey’s mouth broke off his to drag her full lips down his neck, her hands caressing his chest as she placed hot kisses along the sizzling skin. She unbuttoned his pants while still using her tongue and lips on his torso. She lifted her head, her eyes flaring with passion that needed to be met and consumed. Placing her hand around the back of his neck to drive the kiss to deeper depths, his hands slipped the length of her body and pulled her tighter in his arms.

He held her in his arms as close to him as he could, never wanting to let go. Dawson trailed his sensual lips to the pulse in her throat, came up again, gently biting her on the chin. His tongue licked thoroughly across her full, warm lips. Joey’s mouth dropped open slightly and his tongue sank into her. Caressing his tongue with her own, Joey pulled his body over hers as his mouth left hers, his tongue circling the base of her breasts before he worked his way to the hardened centers. Nipping them lightly, she felt a spark of ecstasy course through her body and welcomed the feeling as it spread deep inside her.
Tightening her legs around him so he would make love to her, she leaned into his touch with a sigh and ground herself against him more forcefully. Not moving, she let them savor the movement, using her hand to bring his face up to meet her eyes. Looking in acknowledgement, determination, and lust, he began to move within her, which she immediately joined in to participate.

She held his shoulders tightly in her hands and then pulled his head back to kiss him deeply as he buried himself into her. As the strokes increased, what she saw became a blur, she tilted back slightly, lips slightly parted. Slipping his hand beneath her head he pulled her up and shoved his tongue into her mouth urgently, relishing her instantaneous surrender. Bending down to cup her breast, he kissed the bottom of it, then traced his lips around the base of her breast, finally taking her nipple into his mouth and slowly increased the pressure, causing her to curl against him more, and urge him on. As he felt her begin to shatter, he slowed the pace down, much to Joey’s protest. He wanted this to last longer, but was having an almost impossible time of doing so.

Tenderly he touched her face with the back of his hand.

“I love you,” he said.

She remembered their first kiss, how magical and how desperate they both were in that one moment. She smiled, reaching up to outline his lips with her long, elegant finger. Once he saw that same love in her eyes, he kissed her, sliding into her then pulling almost all the way out. Joey grabbed his back with both hands and when he pushed into her she arched herself to take all of him deeply. The force of her orgasm was driving him over the edge as they together pushed to the final thrust before the pieces of their vision seemed to fall away into nothingness.

“Do you ever feel like you should’ve been here along?” she said, turning onto her side, her elbow on the floor and her head propped up in her hand.

“Yes, more often than I’d like,” he said, brushing his fingers against the side of her face.

“Dawson I’ve…done some really stupid things, some really mean things-“

“No-“

“YES I have. I led you to believe things that weren’t true…or actually you thought them up and I didn’t do a good enough job of telling you they weren’t true. When I…broke up with you, I didn’t fall out of love with you, I haven’t ever fallen out of love with you. And I did break up with you without a good enough reason. I mean I had a good enough reason but I couldn’t keep that reason alive when I still loved you so much and I knew you loved me. So I pushed you away. And I hurt you-“

“Joey you don’t have to-“

“I’m sorry,” she said. “Not that sorry’s enough but I’ve needed to tell you that for a real long time. And that song from that American Idol show, A Moment Like This, that describes so deeply how I felt about our first kiss. You know I could’ve never seen you again after that night, I could’ve never really had your love returned or one of us could’ve died the next day, but we would’ve gotten something most people never get. That perfect moment when you stopped me from going out the window and pulling me to you.”

Dawson smiled as his finger traced the outline of her lips and down her throat.

“That moment changed my life more than I ever knew anything could. You told me you’d fallen in love with me twice, I didn’t have to fall in love with you, I already was I just…was too stupid to realize I wouldn’t have you forever unless I told you I needed you.”

“Not that I’m not having the time of my life but…what time is morning for this crew?”

Dawson’s face grew serious at the realization. “Oh shit,” he exclaimed.

“We should get dressed,” she asked, trying not to laugh at him losing it.

“Uh…yeah,” Dawson said, and she laughed.
