On Noah's Ark
Brett, Jan. 2003. On Noah's ark. New York: GP Putnam's Sons. ISBN: 0399240284

This is the story of Noah's ark from the Bible told through the eyes of his granddaughter.  She helps get the animals onto the boat, calms them down, and keeps the peace between them until the rain stops and they find dry land.

The story itself is predictable.  Any child who is familiar with the Biblical story will already know the end.  The main character is likeable though, despite the dull plot.  She obviously loves the animals and is extremely patient.  When she finally does go to sleep, she's curled up with one of the lions, so the animals obviously like her as well.

The layout of this book is very unique.  The illustrations are on a two page spread with the text on either side.  What's unique is that above the text there are smaller pictures that show a detailed portion of the large picture or a scene just out of view in the large illustration.  For example, there is a large illustration that shows the animals right after they've gotten on the boat.  In the smaller picture to the left you see the animals that live in water swimming around in the bottom portion of the boat, which was out of view in the large illustration.  Then in the small picture on the right, you see the flying animals at the top of the boat, also not in view in the large illustration.  The smaller pictures are displayed in animal shaped windows.

The plot isn't terribly interesting, but the beautiful illustrations, diversity of animals depicted, and a likeable main character make up for it.
