Mercury in wildlife:In several areas of the United States concentrations of mercury in fish and wildlife are high enough to be a risk to wildlife. In studies in Wisconsin, reductions in loon chick production has been found in lakes where mercury concentrations in eggs exceed concentrations that are toxic in laboratory studies. At dietary mercury concentrations that are typical of parts of the Everglades, the behavior of juvenile great egrets can be affected. Studies with mallards, great egrets, and other aquatic birds have shown that protective enzymes are less effective following exposer to mercury. The state advisory against the consumption of fish is growing because of the mercury contamination has raised the awareness of the widespread nature of the mercury hazard. Fish consumption advisories for methylmercury now account for more than three-quarters of all fish consumptions in the United States. |

Forty states have issued advisories for methylmercury on selected water-bodies and 13 states have statewide advisories for some or all sport fish from rivers to lakes. Coastal areas along the gulf of Mexico, Maine, and the Atlantic Ocean from Florida through North Carolina are under advisories for Methylmercury for certain fish. |

Mercury in Humans: There is a few ways of mercury getting into humans. One way is when mercury is let out into the air from factories and from mines people breathe it in with each breath. Another way is from the fillings you get from the dentist when you have a cavity. Even though studies show that fillings don't release enough mercury to be harmful. The most toxic of all the mercury which is methylmercury is brought into the human system by food. It first enters bacteria and then is consumed by the next higher level in the food chain and as it goes up it gets into fish and then we comsume the fish and it is absorbed by the intestines. Some of the effects of mercury poisoning in humans is in the immune system and the enzyme systems. This damages the nervous system. Methylmercury is most damaging to developing embryos which are five to ten times more sensitive than adults. |
