The Lost Patrol

The Patrol that was sent to escort the deBeers Family had not been heard from for over 24 hours. Colonel Helber has dispatched a company with a battery attached to search for them.

"A" company of the 81st hears the volleys of the patrol but can not see them for ridge between them, the Zulu are however aware of A company's presence and are waitng in ambush. Captain Silkin (mounted) wisely orders form line.

The Zulu come racing over the hill and fall upon the rear of the column to be met by a volley of fire, which kills 2 and wounds 9 others including the Amivyo (leader) of this Iviyo. Meanwhile the patrol (out of picture) is attacked by two Iviyo a wild melee ensues but the square holds, though now the wounded outnumber the fit to fight.

The Square breaks, abandoning its wounded in the face of another Zulu charge, the remanants of the Iviyo charge the rear of the column, the head of the column is charged by two more Zulu units, The cannon unlimbers and adds to the carnage.

There are no more pictures of this battle, as I ran out of film.

What happened was.... the Zulu charged, got shot up a few warriors made it into contact, killed or wounded a few brits, failed their Critcal morale checks and fled the battlefield. The square survivors (just 4 other ranks) escaped.

Colonel Helber is incensed by the action of the Zulu and determines to chastise them.
