ATLANTA, GA -May 11, 1998 - And the Grand Prize winner is ... Danny Patterson Jr., age 10, a 5th grader at the Hunt Magnet School in Macon!

BellSouth Mobility (BMI) on May 11 announced Danny as the Grand Prize winner in the Elementary School Visual Arts Competition (ESVAC), Georgia's first-ever visual arts competition for elementary school children, launched in partnership with the 1998 National Black Arts Festival. Danny and eleven other student winners will be honored at a reception on May 31 in downtown Atlanta. BellSouth Mobility will present Danny with a $ 500.00 U.S. Savings Bond and the Hunt Magnet School will be the site of a National Black Arts Festival mini-festival on Tuesday, June 2. The 12 winning works of art also will be displayed in Atlanta, July 10-19, during NBAF 1998.

The other winners and their awards are:

Dorothy Davis, age 12, Burghard Elementary, Bibb County, lst Runner-up, receives a $250 Savings Bond.
Morgan Shaw, age 10, and Angelica Dennis, Age 9, 2nd runners-up, will each receive a $100 Savings Bond. Woodward Elementary students, this team submitted an entry through the Brookhaven Boys and Girls Clubs, DeKalb County.

Honorable Mention awards of a $50 Savings Bond each will be presented to:

Melissa Birt, age 7, Hooper Alexander, DeKalb County
Tasmaii Craft, age 11, Woodward Elementary, DeKalb County
Yolanda Snipes, age 7, Burghard Elementary, Bibb County
Matthew Meeks, age II, Bughard Elementary, Bibb County
Loudine Etienne, age 10, and Nadia Jackson, age 10, Anne E. West, Fulton County (Entries submitted via the Arts Connection affiliation with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Atlanta.)
Donyelle Collins, age 8, and Jarvis Wiley, age 8, students at P.L. Dunbar, Fulton County (Entries submitted via the Arts Connection affiliation with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Atlanta.)

A jury of arts professionals and community leaders selected the winners from entries submitted by students in Grades 1 - 5 who submitted their vision of African hats and masks around the theme, "The journey In Me: Expressions of African Hats & Masks" in 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional art. Invitations to participate in the visual arts competition were extended to elementary schools throughout Metro Atlanta and in Macon/Bibb County.

BellSouth Mobility, celebrating more than 12 years as Metro Atlanta's leading wireless company, has long been active in the arts community in the region. This collaboration continues its strong support since 1988 of the National Black Arts Festival, a biennial showcase for the works of national visual and performing artists, to be held this year from July 10 through 19 in Atlanta.
