The National Black Arts Festival's ArtReach Program is a comprehensive effort to offer quality art education programming. Local children, families and youth groups are welcomed to attend all ArtReach Programs. In its 1 0th Anniversary celebration, the National Black Arts Festival takes "Art Beyond Borders" and into over 30 metro Atlanta communities. The Coca-Cola Co. is the Founding Corporate Sponsor of the National Black Arts Festival's ArtReach Program. Additional support for the 1998 program has been made available by the Fulton County Arts Council, BellSouth Mobility, the Community Foundation of Greater Atlanta, the Lettie Pate Evans Foundation, the Katherine and John Murphy Foundation, Young Audiences of Atlanta, the Atlanta and Magnolia Chapters of the Links, the Atlanta Foundation, Greenbriar Mall, Georgia Council for the Arts, Underground Atlanta, the City of Atlanta Bureau of Cultural Affairs the High Museum of Art and Capezio/Ballet Makers Dance Foundation. The ArtReach Program is sponsored by the Coca-Cola Co in association the Fulton County Arts Council, the Community Foundation of Greater Atlanta, the Atlanta and Magnolia Chapters of the LINKS, Young Audiences of Atlanta Inc., the Lettie Pate Evans Foundation, the Katherine & John Murphy Foundation and the City of Atlanta Bureau of Cultural Affairs.
"Art in the Park" Evening Performances and free
Workshop Series
In partnership with the West End Performing Arts Center, the NBAF will sponsor
groups such as Giwayen Mata and Barefoot Ballet to perform and conduct free
workshops in the park nightly, July 13-17, for festival-goers and community
groups.

Create Your Own Art Workshop/Make & Takes
Local professional artists will lead children of all ages in free visual
art workshops. Children will have "hands-on activities" and create
their own imaginative artwork. Workshops are free and open to the public.

Weekend Family Concert Series
In partnership with the Mall West End and the West End Neighborhood Development,
the NBAF will sponsor a series of performances by local jazz and gospel
musicians.

Roots and Branches: Performance and Workshops Series
Families and community groups are invited to participate in visual arts
workshops and performances in the park, conducted in partnership with Young
Audiences. Group participation must be arranged by reservation.

Literary Readings & Storytelling
At the following local libraries, invited literary artists of the festival
will read for the public. All festival-goers, families and individuals are
invited. All events are free.

Human Loom Performance
In partnership with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Atlanta and the City of
Atlanta Bureau of Cultural Affairs, the NBAF will sponsor this performance
at Piedmont Park. This "Human Loom' performance is the culmination
of a 10-day residency of Polly Harrison, noted fiber artist. 24 youth will
use recycled parachute materials to weave a piece of artworks that will
make its home at the Youth Art Connection, the Boys and Girls Club children's
gallery in downtown Atlanta. This final weaving will be exhibited in the
Convergence exhibit, "A New Beat and Shade with Fiber.' Weaving will
be performed to the beat of the African Talking Drum in the park. All are
invited to attend.

The High Museum Family Day "Festival of Culture:
The Art of Roy DeCarava"
Explore the photographs of Roy DeCarava, an African-American
who takes pictures of ordinary people and celebrates jazz musicians. Create
your own work of art. Listen to music performed by the NBAF Youth Jazz Ensemble
and see a photography display presented by local teens.

"Starting at the Beginning' - A celebration of
Arts and Education
In partnership with the Atlanta Consortium for Arts and Education and the
Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education, the National Black Artists
will host a performance and presentation by nationally known literary artist,
folklorist and educator, Ralph Cheo Thurman. Thurman, a welcomed new addition
to the Atlanta area, celebrates the importance of art education by reading
from his most recent publication, 'Black Eyed Peas for the Soul.' There
will also be a presentation by Akbar Imhotep, puppeteer and storyteller.

"African Skies" Planetarium Project
In partnership with the Planetarium Division of the Atlanta Public Schools,
NBAF will present a narration and musical presentation of ancient African
tales and stories. This program introduces the audience to the diverse and
fascinating mythologies based on the constellations of the stars.

Capoeira Institute
In partnership with Artists in Residence International, Georgia State University
and the International Capoeira Angola Foundation, the NBAF presents the
Capoeira Angola Conference 1998. This 3-
day workshop series will be held at Georgia State University and ends with

Sing to the Sun
A family celebration of spirituals, poetry and African tales hosted by composer
Alvin Singleton. Featuring poet, storyteller, illustrator and painter Ashley
Bryan, violinist Dianne Monroe and the Spivey Hall Children's Choir.

Hitting Home
A theatrical production whose purpose is to demonstrate to the audience
the ravaging effect that violence is having on society. This play, by and
for youth, points out how so many acts of violence are being accepted and
sometimes even considered normal and part of everyday life.

Harriet Returns for Us
This theatrical presentation will be performed for the enjoyment
of children and families throughout the festival. The play is a historical
account of Harriet Tubman's life and contribution to our present history.
