Security Procedures

One essential security procedure to complete for Windows XP machines is to disable unused services. Services are programs that Windows uses to complete internal and external processes. Some of these services can leave your computer vulnerable, but are unused. Windows leaves many of these services enabled by default. HMMMM. So in summary, Unused service + vulnerablility = Microsoft leaves service enabled. The procedure can be completed in the following way.

1. Click Start, Run... and type services.msc.

2. The services screen will open.

3. Right click on the service you wish to disable, select properties and left click. This will open the individual service's properties screen.

4. In the properties screen click on the Startup Type menu and select disable. Repeat steps 2-4 for each service you wish to disable. Below is a list of service that I have found to be safe to disable.
