Trip to Mfolozi Game Reserve
November 2005

Here are some pictures of how we really live in "darkest Africa", surrounded by rampaging wild animals - rhinos, lions, tigers... oops, wrong continent.

Recently I met a cyber friend visiting from Canada. I arranged a 2 night visit to a game park with him and his travelling companions (1 a fellow Canadian, the other 2 from Argentina).

Accommodation in South African game parks is pretty good and relatively inexpensive. We had a charming cottage, with an open verandah where we could sit, looking over the plains below. And we were visited by a number of wild animals, including a hyena - coming to scavenge for food (or for us perhaps - its intentions were unclear).

Apart from eating and generally lazing around, we went for some long game drives. In so far as seeing game, we were not particularly lucky (we didn't see any cats), but we did see elephant and buffalo (in the distance), and a number of rhinos up close, a few giraffe, lots of the usual antelope (impala, nyala) wildebeest (gnu) and zebra.

Stopping off at the river to look for game (there were some buffalo down at the river)

AND THEN...
Close encounter of the third kind!

And of course lots and lots of our little favourites:

After this visit Ken and John were feeling thoroughly ashamed of themselves for having eaten warthog pie a couple of nights before.
