What is a friend?
A companion who is always there to defend?
An acquaintance who can make you smile?
A well-wisher who will talk for a while?
An ally who is always there to lend a helping hand?
An encourager, the best in the land?
A confidant who'd never tell?
A supporter who picked you up when you fell?
A cohort to complete all your schemes?
A comrade who picked you when picking teams?
A familiar who knew your every thought?
A crony who made sure each battle was well fought?
An amigo who was always there when you thought you were alone?
A schoolmate who'd sort out your problems on the phone?
A chum who'd never let you walk around with a frown?
A defender who'd never let you be put down?
Is a friend all of these?
Someone tell me, please.
Is a friend any of these?
Now, please, don't tease,
I need to know,
Could a friend ever be your most hated foe?
Tell me, could I be your friend?
If you don't it doesn't matter, I'll find out in the end.
Towards you I feel a strong devotion.
Could this be, shared between friends, the right emotion?
Whatever your definition of what a friend should be,
True friends need only two qualities, you see,
Whenever you need help, there should be your friend,
And when it comes down to it, your friend should be there to the end.
