Twilight

After the Sun sets behind the horizon, the sky is still illuminated by light reflected by the atmosphere.
We observe the birds on the estuary.
In spite of the traffic in the bridge that returns the commuters from the big city to the suburbs, the flamingos
continue feeding on the salt pans.
Some more arrive, leaving a fuzzy blot on the film.
The egrets and cormorants are leaving their feeding grounds and flying towards roosting trees.
For more than one hour more birds keep coming, and fighting for a good perch where to spend the night.
Everything is tinged with the strong colors of the sky.
Note: The brigde in this pictures is the Vasco da Gama Bridge over the Tagus Estuary,
just outside the portuguese capital, Lisbon.
The decision by the portuguese government to construct this 12 km long bridge was highly polemical in the Portugese Society.
The location of this bridge, the construction costs, the environmenta impact on the nearby Tagus Estuary
Nature Reserve and the resulting landstate speculation was never justified adequatly.
The fact that today several bird species, as the flamingos, use the nearby Samouco salt pans does not detract from the
environmental impact caused during the construction and specially, trough the fierce urbanization of the
rural areas of Setúbal Pensnsula.
