Lunar Lace

After dusk capitulates,
whimper stilled by blackened sky,
night evokes a pale parade
of ancient light as Earth rolls by.

Children search for dipper glowing
in the northern stretch at night,
watch three warriors mutely stalk
a running bear caught in their light.

Shadows hold a moonlit sortie,
stumble toward a midnight race,
'til their footsteps wanly tangle
in the firs, like lunar lace.

Predilection

Last night a soaking wind disturbed the yard,
huge dorsal on the back of storm, nearly
dousing unfazed sleepers in their beds.

Slicing the oaks, it gnashed their straggled arms
with drizzled teeth and plied them in its hands
to test their nerve. The weakest broke; like gnarled,
discarded bones they camouflaged the ground.

So far three baskets hold the kindling, limbs
too thick to snap pressed with my foot, display
a wet-toed strength. Tonight they'll make a red
and ochre blaze, belying midnight's iced
destruction by a brash storm's errant wrath.
March arbor terror sated a cold day's
damp predilection for a hearty fire.

Cement Ship

Plundered,
broken,
borne with despair
on the shoulders of the sea,

her keening voice
echoed in tide that
surged through her like
ill-fated krill.

Asleep on jasmine
bluffs, the coral sun
watched breakers
taste her,

saw seals, pelicans,
sea ducks and swooping gulls -
new life in her womb -
establish sanctuary.

The cement ship froths
with promise, renews
the dignity of refuge
with every salt-glazed dawn.

Crocus Greeting

Like fists of green they grasp the light,
spread fingers toward the sun;
each day they inch toward size and strength
'til twilight whispers, "Done."

Their purple buds play orchid songs
and spread new petals wide;
they preen for winning winter's match
against an icy tide.

They cobble soil by my front porch,
a crocus greeting there,
whose early hail I favor more
than blossoms twice as fair.
