Waterfowl

(Order Anseriformes, Family Anatidae)

Waterfowl in North America are divided into seven subfamilies:

Waterfowl are aquatic, with webs between the three front toes. They have long necks and narrow pointed wings, and most have short legs. They differ from loons and grebes in having flattened bills with tooth-like edges that serve as strainers. Their flattened bodies are well insulated with down feathers. When the young hatch, they are covered with down. They can walk and swim a few hours after hatching.
