Stiff-tailed Ducks

(Subfamily Oxyurinae)

Waterfowl (Order Anseriformes, Family Anatidae in North America are divided into seven subfamilies:

Stiff-tailed ducks: small and stubby, with a short, thick neck. In swimming, the tail is often held up at a jaunty angle. They dive, and sometimes sink slowly, as grebes do.

The only member of this subfamily which is likely be seen in Northern Utah is the Ruddy Duck (Oxyura jamaicensis)
