Mule's Ears
Mule's Ears are among our common spring blooming foothill wildflowers.
They are in the Sunflower Family (Compositae), have yellow flowers,
and shiny green leaves shaped like a mule's ear.
In "Mountain Plants of Northeastern Utah", a publication from Utah State
University, it states: "Mule Ears (Wyethia amplexicaulis)
can be found blooming on our gravelly foothills in May and June. It is a
robust plant 2 to 3 feet high, with large shiny leaves and golden yellow
heads four inches in diameter. It is strongly aromatic, and generally
unpalatable to animals. It was named for Nathaniel J. Wyeth, who collected
it on the return trip of a western expedition in 1834.
