Death Camas

The Foothill Death Camas (Zigadenus paniculatus) is a member of the Lily Family (Liliaceae). It is lovely to look at, but deadly poison to eat. It grows up to eighteen inches tall, with creamy white blossoms and showy orange stamens. It blooms earlier than the Sego Lily.

In "Mountain Plants of Northeastern Utah", from Utah State University, it says, "The Foothill Death Camas is showy on our foothills in May. Its erect, stiff stems that often reach eighteen inches in height, are flanked with smooth grass-like basal leaves arranged in formal balance on three sides. The creamy white blossoms have orange stamens that give them a soft lacy quality. It is very poisonous to livestock and people."
