Some Small Mammals
of the High Country

Yellow Bellied Marmot
Marmota flaviventris

Length: Head and body - 14 to 20 inches
Tail - 5 to 9 inches
Bulky body; white markings on dark face; bushy tail
Habitat: Rocky slopes and valleys


Pika
Ochotona princeps

Length: Head and body - 6 to 9 inches
Rat-like head and body; small, rounded ears; no visible tail
Habitat: Rock-strewn slopes

Chickaree
Tamiasciurus hudsonicus

Length: Head and body - 7 to 9 inches
Tail - 4 to 6 inches
Rusty above, whitish below
Habitat: Northern and mountain coniferous forests


Golden-Mantled Ground Squirrel
Spermophilus lateralis

Length: Head and body - 6 to 8 inches
Tail - 2 to 4 inches
Chipmunk-like, but head without stripes; stripes on each side of back; tail short and hairy, but not bushy
Habitat: High mountains, in coniferous forests and chaparral
