The Carlton Family History --

the Maine Part

Introduction:

The next few pages delineate the family tree of one small branch of the Carlton Family in Maine. Descending from John8 Carleton (b. 1660/61) in Rowley, MA to John9 Carleton ( b.1689/90) in Andover, MA who married Hannah Barker on Jan 13, 1715 in Andover, MA and with whom he sired nine children ... all of whom were born in Massachusetts. Hannah died at age 36 on Jan. 22, 1733 in Andover, MA leaving John9 a widower with nine children... the eldest of whom was their son, Joshua, aged 18 and the youngest, their daughter, Susannah, merely 2.

We next pick up the story of John9 Carleton approximately six years later where mention is made of his marriage in Woolwich, ME to Mary Hutchinson of Woolwich, in 1739(?). John9 and Mary apparently had only one child together, (thankfully), John10 Carleton who was born in Woolwich (ME) July 1, 1740.

It is this lineage, then, which will be followed through from this 10th generation to the present 18th generation of this particular branch of the Maine Carltons. The material which follows will, I trust, be continually evolving by further efforts on my part as well as information supplied by others... perhaps you have additional information or further details you would be willing to share? Much information is needed ... but, in my opinion, all of us Carltons owe Ron Carlton an incredible debt of gratitude for what has obviously been a labor of incredible love. His web site is a masterful report of Carlton history and serves as the primary building block leading up to these pages.

In the late 1960's and into the 80's, my grandfather, George15 Melvin Carlton, began to retrace the family tree. This became a labor of love to him and he travelled to libraries, town offices, and other repositories of genealogical significance throughout New England. He visited cemeteries and pawed through attics. He talked with other Maine Carltons... some who's relationship was known and some who's relationship was somewhat less clear but the Carltons were important to him and he amassed a great deal of information.

This information was made available to Worral Dumont Prescott who, by virtue of a long-ago marriage, was part of the Carlton tree in the broad sense and who was writing a book of the Carlton genealogy. His intention was to publish his book and have it sold throughout the Carlton family but his pre-publication offer to reserve copies went largely unheeded by the Carltons and Prescott's book was relegated to a very few photocopied issues. The copy on file in the Maine State Library in Augusta includes a short note taped into the front which clearly reflects his disappointment, frustration, and, what may also be interpreted as anger, that (paraphrased here) 'the Carltons were simply too cheap a lot to be interested in their family history.' (I promise to get the accurate quotation on my next run to the State Library!)

Nonetheless, Ron Carlton seems to have access to a copy of this part of the story as some of his material has been referenced as having come from the Prescott book (Prescott, Worall Dumont. A Carlton Genealogy and History. USA: privately published, 1967.)

George M. Carlton died on the first of December 1984 at the age of 90 yrs. 10 months in Bath, ME and his genealogical records were somewhat dispersed at that time. I am very fortunate to have obtained posession of the family Bible which had been presented to Ira and Hattie (Savage) Carlton by her father, Samuel S. Savage -- presumably on the occasion of their marriage. In this Bible, records of births, deaths, and marriages had been maintained quite thoroughly up to my grandfather's birth before entries had no longer been made. He, however, upon undertaking his researches, had made many new entries which brought much of the information current as of the 1970's.

Other records have been removed for study by another branch of the family ... the Hendersons ... who were included upon the marriage of Charles T. Henderson to my grandfather's sister, Bertha Belle Carlton.

Another group of records which I have not yet had occasion to work through is in the possession of my uncle, John16 L. Carlton, of Wiscasset, ME and I am most anxious to begin adding further details from those sources.

Further information may only be available in the Prescott book as my grandfather was the primary source of details which were ultimately assembled in that reference.

Again, major thanks and kudos to Ron Carlton and, Ron, I didn't intend any intrusion on your material but when I began this study your site just happened to coincidentally end the branch at the Ira Carlton level -- whose Bible I now have -- so it seemed that the logical point of entry into my story should be the point just before the Woolwich Carltons established.
