Notes for Leonard James Boggs: June 23, 2003: Date of death confirmed by a postcard that was sent by Ethel Looney Edwards to Goldie Boggs Ross on April 22, 1945. "We received this message from Aunt Ida (Boggs) Sat night at midnight. Brother died suddenly letter following and that is all that she said." (Confirmed that April 22, 1945 was a Sunday so the date of death, April 21, is correct.

4. Enoch Boggs, born June 1874 in Virginia; died July 19, 1944 in Closplint, Harlan County, KY. He was buried in Harlow, Kentucky. He was the son of 8. James Boggs and 9. Phoebe Shepherd. He married 5. Rachel Elkins June 16, 1893 in Letcher County, Kentucky. 5. Rachel Elkins, born February 1863 in Whitesburg, Kentucky; died October 05, 1928 in Jenkins, Letcher County, KY. She is buried in Appalachia, Virginia.
Notes for Enoch Boggs: The following information was provided by Avery Clark, son of Maudie Boggs who was a daughter of Enoch. Enoch lived at the foot of Pine Mountain in Harlan County. He had one son by his second wife Alfair (sp?). The son's name was Eugene and he was born in Baxter, KY. When Enoch became ill Alfair took him to Maudie's house at Black Bottom and left him. Neither she nor Eugene were ever heard from again. Maudie took care of Enoch until he died. Enoch was buried on Ivey Hill. Avery said that he went back years later but could not locate the grave. He believes that houses were built on the graveyard. No one knew anything about a graveyard there.
Notes for Rachel Elkins: Rachel's ancestry is a brick wall. We have still not been able to determine the parents names with any certainty. The 1900 census showed both of her parents to be from Kentucky; however, the 1910 census shows her father to be from Virginia and her mother to be from North Carolina; and the 1920 census shows her father to be from Virginia and her mother from the United States. The death certificate shows year of birth to be 1863.
Rachel's grandson Avery Clark has said that he heard that Rachel's son, Leonard James, was driving her over the mountain and she died in the car. The death certificate stated she was " dead on arrival at the hospital. The woman, a tourist, was brought to hospital dead. I did not see relatives and can give no diagnosis as to cause of death." The informant of the information was James Boggs. Leonard/James went by both Leonard and James.
The death certificate also showed Rachel's father as John Elkins, born in Whitesburg, KY. Have tried to find Rachel with her parents in the 1870 and 1880 census and have not been able to find a John Elkins with a child by the name of Rachel.
1880 census: May have found Rachel in the 1880 census in Wise County, Virginia. Birth year is 1861 and not 1863. She is in the household of Jackson Creech, age 28; wife Martha Clay, 18; son Alen, 3; Arthur, 1. Rachel is shown to have been born in Kentucky, father in Virginia and mother in Tennessee. She is a housekeeper. The census is for Richmond, Wise County, Virginia. There is also a Hiram Elkins, age 6, living next door in the household of Hiram and Mary J. Miller. This Hiram Miller is probably the Uncle of Hiram Elkins. John and Mary Miller had a son named Hiram Miller who would be the age of this Hiram Miller. See the 1870 information below for more information regarding Elkins children residing with a Miller family.
1870 census: Have found a Rachel Elkins, age 9(1861 birth year), in the household of John and Mary Miller in Richmond Twp, Big Stone Gap, Wise County, Virginia. In addition to the children of John and Mary, Mary A. Elkins, age 13, and Sarah J. Elkins, age 12, are also in the same household. There were no Elkins children with the Millers in 1860. The Miller household was also a couple of households from James and Phoebe Boggs who were the parents of Enoch. In researching the 1850 census for Lee County, Virginia, it appears these Millers are the grandparents of the Eldridge children. John and Mary Miller had a daughter Susan who is the same age as the Susannah below. 1860 census: Found a John H. Elkins, age 22, from Virginia with his wife Susannah, age 28, along with children Polly A., age 4, and Sarah J., age 1. These two children appear to be the same children in the 1870 census above. The name Polly and Mary were used interchangeably in those days. This John Elkins was a couple of households from James and Phoebe Boggs in the 1860 census. It is quite possible that this is the John Elkins who was Rachel's father. Could not locate this John Elkins and wife Susannah in the 1870 census index. CONCLUSION: We believe that John Elkins and Susannah Miller Elkins were the parents of Rachel Elkins.
Children of Enoch Boggs and Rachel Elkins are: (1) Ida B Boggs, born March 1891 in Kentucky; married (1) Wilson Withrow; born Abt. 1890 in West Virginia; married (2) Jack Clark; married (3) Woolery Campbell. Notes for Rebecca Jane Griffith: Rebecca Jane is one of the family's "road blocks". Rebecca is believed to be of Cherokee ancestry but we have no proof.
Children of Mathias Brown and Rebecca Griffith are: (1)Dora Brown, born April 27, 1897 in Appalachia, Virginia; died September 1986 in Wenatchee, Chelan County, Washington; married Leonard James Boggs.
