400. Michael Holt, born December 30, 1696 in Alsace, Germany; died November 1767 in Orange County, North Carolina. He was the son of 800. Martin Holt and 801. Anna Brickhmann. He married 401. Anna Elizabeth Scheible. 401. Anna Elizabeth Scheible, born September 17, 1700 in Baden, Germany. She was the daughter of 802. Johann George Scheible and 803. Maria Eleanora Berger.
Notes for Michael Holt: The Holt name in German is Hold.
From notes on Germanna: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~george/johnsgermnotes/germhs18.html Michael Holt (Hold in German) came as a young bachelor and found a wife in Virginia. He was accompanied by his mother and step father (John Spade/Johannes Spth). They were from the village of Stetten am Heuchelberg, which is a bigger name than the village. There are four roads out of town, one to Gemmingen, one to Schwaigern, one to Zaberfeld, and one to Brackenheim. All four of these villages have been mentioned and none are more than a few miles away. Incidentally, descendants have sponsored some research, which has disclosed some technical errors in the "Before Germanna" account. Michael Holt's claim to being a member of the Second Colony is based on the lawsuit of Spotswood against him, and having land patented in 1726. ***************************** Abstract of will: Will of Michael Holt. Dated 31 June 1765, proved Nov 1767. wife: Elizabeth son: Peter "my children" name and number not stated. Executors: "my dear son Michael Holt, Junior, and Nicholas Holt, Junior." Witnesses: John Butler, William Carlisle
Notes for Anna Elizabeth Scheible: Notes from Germanna Virginia: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~george/johnsgermnotes/germhs18.html The Scheible family left no male heir in Virginia, so there are no English spellings of the name. The family came from the same small village as the Blankenbakers, Fleshmans, Schlucters, and the Thomases. Margaret James Squires, a major researcher of the emigrants from this village, thought the Scheibles might be related to the other families, but she found no conclusive proof. The Scheible family had five daughters, all of whom had the first name of Anna. Three of them were given the name Anna Maria but the first two died. Three daughters came to America in 1717 but the fate of only one, Anna Elisabetha, is known. She married Michael Holt. Children of Michael Holt and Anna Scheible are: |

He was leading these men to Wilmington at the time of Moore's Creek Bridge Battle. Afterwards, he was arrested and held in Halifax. In May 1777, he and about 30 principal Tories were sent to a Philadelphia prison. Holt contrived to make interest with Congress. Release was granted to Holt and most native-born Americans (Symth in Hatch 1969:86). By 1780, he was home again and cooperated with local Whigs (Troxler 1999:86). **************************************** Shields, Ruth Herndon, [View Citation] [Table of Contents] Abstracts of wills recorded in Orange County, North Carolina, 1752-1800 : and 202 marriages not shown in the Orange County marriage bonds) and Abstracts of wills recorded in Orange County, North Carolina, 1800-1850 Baltimore: Genealogical Pub. Maria Catharina Gross September 14, 1724 in Hirzenhain, Hesse, Germany. 457. Maria Catharina Gross, born February 24, 1695/96 in Steinberg, Germany; died in Berks County, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of 914. Johann Gross and 915. Anna Maria.
Notes for Thomas Appel, all information from http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~monticue/Apple_history.htm: In 1749, when Thomas was about 52 years old, he and his son Johann "Adam" Appel, who was approximately 17 years old at the time, and a Johannes Appel, perhaps a brother to Thomas, or his father, migrated to Pennsylvania. No record of their having wives with them on this journey have been found and at this time and we are assuming that Maria Catharina Gross, Thomas' wife, had died before they immigrated. Thomas and Johann made the journey on the ship Ranier, which sailed from the ports of Hanau, Wirtenburg, Darmstaat, and Eisenberg, and landed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 26, 1749. Naturalization occurred on 14 September, 1761, Alsace Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. "Pennsylvania German Pioneers" by Strassburger and Hinke, Volume 1, page 413.
The Appel name was changed to Apple when they migrated to the United States; weather this was intentional, or an error, is not known. The family lived in the Philadelphia area for a time, (where they might have (not proven, but there is a good possibility they did) worked off an indenture of five to nine years that paid for their passage to the new country). Sometime, between 1760 and 1770, Thomas Apple and Johann "Adam" his son migrated to Guilford County, North Carolina. Children of Thomas Appel and Maria Gross are: |
