COINS OF FINLAND - RUSSIAN
IMPERIAL PERIOD (pt.2)
|
In 1860, Finland got its own currency, as a part of notable
autonomy under Russian crown. New currency, Markka was divided into 100 penniä.
Several denominations of paper money was released before coins. First
issued coins for circulation were copper 1 penni, and silver 50 penniä and 1
markka, dated
1864. In the next year two more silver and two more copper
denominations were released. Silver coins have not been changed
too much, while on copper coins reverses was emperor's monogram,
resulting three types of each of the three copper coins until
1917, when great Russian empire came to its end.
Studying coins from this period a little bit
I realized there exists few more subtypes than in Krause
World coins catalog, even few more than in Uzdenikov
catalog of Russian coins for silver coins. There are much
more minor varieties, but I have distinguished here just major
varieties. Silver coins dated 1872. are quite different from
later dates, although they have "dentilated border",
as described in Krause, they are some kind of transitional coins
between older and earlier coins. Two markkaa coin 1870.
is also a different type, more similar to older ones. Very
interesting, although expectable is that 1
markka from the same year is also type for itself, but as it is
very rare (mintage of about 5 pieces only) some early restrikes
were made so often mixed with original coins. Restrikes have
been made with later dies for G. E. Mikhailovich collection.
